This should've been good

It had two A-list stars, gorgeous scenery, and good time period costumes. They didn't stick to the book at all. George was ruthless from page one, killing a man in "self defense" in the novel. Serena was willful, intelligent, determined (training her eagle for days without food or water), and strong as well as merciless. She was not soft as she was portrayed in the movie. She was opinionated and harsh and none of that came across after the first 20 minutes. It's a shame, the acting was there, but the tone was off as well as the characters.

Or at least a lot better. I had read an article in a magazine I can't think of that said the Smokey Mountains were completely clear cut. That is why I rented and watched the movie to begin with. They did not do enough to emphasize that either.

They could have used existing archive footage from newspapers in their parks meetings as well. Here is a link if anyone is interested in reading about those logging events. Sorry it has commercial advertising on it's side bars and I am not involved in their marketing. I am just interested in the history.

I haven't read the book and to be honest probably never will now. I know film adaptions are frequently different from their literary origins, but this film is a terrible advertisement for the book.🐭
