Check those newspaper headlines at the end of the movie.

they didn't have to. psycho ed helped the principal's secretary sue him for sexual harassment, and they won her a huge settlement.

psycho ed won HER a huge settlement. did she pay back psycho ed for them? no. did they even know her? why would she do that? she wasnt saved by them. it was all due to the vice-dean and the computer/camera guy.

they still owe psycho ed 49k.

reply

if you saw the headline on the paper, it was accompanied by a photo of psycho ed and the secretary, obviously involved in a relationship, vacationing in some tropical getaway. since she was apparently sharing the settlement with him, it's plausible that ed saw this as more than enough payback for the money he was owed.

While his change of heart was strange, it was still apparent in the movie. He decided the help them and decided to let them off the hook.

At the end of the movie, as it's becoming clear that a lot of people are thinking of hiring him as a lawyer (they were asking him for his business cards). He realizes this, and sees this as a way to make some big money with some open and shut cases..he gives the two boys a smile and a peace sign, signaling the all things square before he leaves the room. The boys are totally relieved, and laughing.

Now that I think about it, Ed must have been listening/ watching from the door at the tape played and thought about what Travis said about what they're up against. It just wasn't clear enough. Needed a cutaway to him listening. But that would have blown his entrance.
