intense religious themes at end ruin this decent comedy

i was misled thinking this was going to be a campy "make fun of armageddon movie" but instead it actually IS an armageddon movie after mostly as a comedian buddy movie. the last 1/3 of the movie turns into a fanatical christian tale of who gets to heaven. there is no joke about it, it's treated real and it doesn't fit the movie at all. the sacrifice instant access to heaven *beep* it just makes a turn into blatant propaganda for the church after a halfway decent flick that i got some chuckles from. its good to see other threads also mentioning how this is despicable. hollywood is special needs shortbus challenged.

Oh come ON! This is a p!$$ take! If anything, this is the perfect atheist's movie because it's just a pastiche of all things Christian. The whole film was a send-up, right from the moment the world starts falling apart and the evil sinners were swallowed up into hell.

I don't wish to be rude but you really didn't get it, did you?

reply

bah they made heaven a joke. i am agnostic and i didnt feel like they were pushing religion on me

intense religious themes and propaganda? are you serious with this nonsense?

if you think the last 1/3 of the movie was "a fanatical christian tale of who gets to heaven," what do you think the first 2/3s were? giant beams of blue light? a huge pit of fire opening up and people falling down? the world scorched by fire?

honestly.

as for the church's propaganda - if anything this movie demonstrates the redundancy of organized religion by boiling it down to "be nice and don't do bad sh!t"

it was making fun of the entire concept. if you didn't catch that as the take home message then you're just looking for an excuse to be offended.

Did you hate Dogma as well? That movie was WAY more preachy. It was playing sing-song with the religion for edginess sake. This movie was downright mocking it.

reply

So you hate the movie because it has some Christian themes? A bit bigoted and close minded.

reply

It wasn't some pro-religious film, it was just a goofy comedy.

I am an atheist and there is nothing on this earth I detest more than militant atheists that feel the need to attack anything resembling religion. They tend to be unpleasant people in general, not just about religion. I make every effort to stay very far away from them.

There was no pro-religious theme, the movie is loosely based on the Book of Revelation for comedic purposes. No Christian is going to watch this movie and think it supports their religion since the theology is totally off base - for example in this movie you get to heaven only by being a good person. Christians believe you must accept Jesus as your savior in order to get to heaven. And I doubt many of them envision heaven as a never-ending party full of weed and scantily clad women.

reply

Exactly, and they barely mentioned Jesus at all. The religion in the movie wasn't Christianity, or even anything recognizable as a real religion; it was just a light hearted take-off on pop culture's view of heaven, hell, demons, armageddon, etc. It wasn't intended to be a statement about anything serious.

Cough Catholics believe your deeds determine where you end up.

Um, there was no mention of Jesus, and it made up portions of Revelations.

It also has them smoking weed in Heaven.

You're an idiot. Or a troll.

The OP is taking it way too seriously, but why is weed in heaven somehow proving it wasn't religious? Last time I checked weed wasn't a sin haha. Against the legal law but ya know
