Why were they basically the same age? I mean, in reality they're like 34 and 28 which is 6 years apart but even in the movie, Mandy looks 20 something and her mom looks 30.. So I never really understood how that could've been possible. Was that just me or did it bother anyone else?
shareGood point. That's happened a number of times in movies where they have cast an actress to play someone's mother when there's only ten years or so difference in age between them.
But some people do look much younger than their actually age. This was true for me when I was younger: when I was 23, that was the last time someone asked me what grade I was in.

Because when you need to portray a character who ages 20 years, it is easier to cast a younger actress and age her than it is to cast an older actress and make her younger. So they cast a younger woman.
However...if you thought htat Brenda MArsh looked to be about 30 years old at the end of the movie, my god...I don't want to know the peole yoou are changing around with. I am 40 and she looked a hell of a lot older than me and any females that are around my age.
