Best german movie since 'The Lives of Others'
Never thought that I would say that about a german comedy.
But this really is the best Hamburg-movie I've even seen.
I always liked Fatih Akin, but for this one I love him. Thank you!

Wow, that's saying a lot. The Lives of Others was an amazing movie and is one of my favourite movies of all time. After discovering Akin a couple of years ago with "The Edge of Heaven" and "Head On", two excellent intense movies, I couldn't wait to see Soul Kitchen when I heard it was opening up this past weekend. Then I read the summary that it was a bit more of a comedy so my expectations kind of changed as I knew it wouldn't be on the same level of his previous works.
Reddevil sums it up for me, "clever, funny, simple little movie".
You can't expect a filmmaker to keep pumping out movies like "Head On" every single time.
The story was quite simplistic but at the end of the day life really is quite simple and that's really what it was about. I thought the characters were great, yes a little stereotypical like someone said, but hey it was a light-hearted movie so it's all good.

its about german history and germans are most of the actors but the director is still austrian. so it probably would count as austrian.
You got that right!!! Totally different theme, though, that seems drawn directly from life, a welcome addition to my store of beloved German films. Bravi, bravissimi!!!
shareI just saw this movie in a film festival here in Chile, and I just loved it. It's fun, energetic, and hilarious.
"The Love you take is equal to the Love you make" The Beatles.
Akin makes another very successful film. While not packing the power of "The Edge of Heaven" and "Head On," this entertaining little gem is recommended. Great performances and plenty of laughs. We were chuckling and dancing as the credits rolled.

I agree completely.
I liked all of Akins movies. But this one was ... disappointing.
The one thing that disappointed me is that it was very predictable, which is the last thing I would say about his previous films (including "In July," check that one out if you haven't seen it). But it was highly enjoyable for what it was. Now I hope Akin goes back to surprising us.
shareIts a good film but its just a simple comedy. The Lives of Others, White Ribbon and even previous films made by Fatih Akin like Edge of Heaven and Head On are on another level. The latter are far more serious, provocative, dramatic in nature with lot of depth in characters and themes.
Soul Kitchen doesnt have a lot of depth and its also fairly conventional and predictable. Its still a lot better than most comedies out there.
Surprisingly good, with contemporary uses of iPhone, Skype, Soul Kitchen let us see the modern Germany of the date, worth watching, worth my rating of 9.
