Maybe it's lost a lot in the translation...

... but I wouldn't really call it a comedy... Having said that, it's interesting, fun and different - I enjoyed it.

That's the problem with the simplistic genere terms used for marketing films nowadays. What this is, is 'Mainstream Japanese Crowd-Pleaser - which is ultimately kind of silly, but plays out seriously although it will make you laugh in places, and possibly cry, and will no doubt have happy ending'.

But "Comedy" is easier to place on the video shelf.

This is Mainstream for Japan? Man, I wish I lived in Japan sometimes haha. Their Film Industry seems to just be outstanding, where even oddball movies like this are considered crowd pleasing.

I suppose it's a "Comedy" in the Shakespearian manner

It's a comedy in the sense that Shaun of the Dead is a comedy.

Dry, deadpan, full of gags and awkward behavior...bordering black comedy, but to a purpose.

I laughed a lot during the film but at the end of the day the laughs weren't what made this film work.
It was the story that was so well done capturing the heroic moments in our otherwise ordinary lives.
