Anyone else confused by the dialogue?

I'm sorry to anyone who enjoyed the movie. I'm not trying to mock it in any way, but I had a hard time with the dialogue. It felt like they were talking really fast.. And some parts I honestly didn't know what they were even talking about

I'm glad someone said it! Sometimes I was really confused about what was going on.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one.

Wasn't just you

The wife and I saw a trailer for this in theaters and we were hoping for a whimsical smart comedy like Crazy Stupid Love - instead we were greeted by an empty shell of a movie.

The dialogue felt hollow and disconnected, like none of the characters were actually interacting with EACH OTHER, but rather the thoughts in their head and was a dialogue to themselves.

The plot / setting made me understand the movie more than the characters/interactions did...

Thank goodness you guys felt this way too! My friend and I were watching it and I had to turn to her several times to ask what they were even talking about. And she wasn't 100% either lol.

And I agree- the dialogue between characters was sometimes more like a series of independent thoughts than an actual conversation. I don't know who wrote this movie, but the writing style reminded me a little of James L. Brooks. He has a tendency (in my opinion) toward very self-aware, almost nerotic characters too. In small doses, it can make sense but I think they overdid it a little

Man you hit it on right the head with the adjectives you used. The wife and father in law and I were trying the put into words just how little thought provoking and emotional this movie was.

You got it right with:
Empty shell of a movie and disconnected

I actually thought the concept could work but there was just no emotion, it made me feel nothing that could make me want to buy in and believe it.

...I would however love to buy your lunch, maybe look at a family album...

Ok, good to know others have this feeling. I watched it late and thought I was nodding off or something because I felt like I missed half the movie. It did seem like everyone was just talking at one another about things that didn't relate or make sense.

Dialog was painfully awful :( I'm so disappointed.

I enjoyed the movie overall, I have to say, but it didn't stop it from being a very weird movie, all the same.

I was keeping up with the general storyline and the dialogue okay, until after the initial conversations/negotiations with "Bumpy"...then things got a little muddled for me. Although, one thing that really seriously confused me was maybe 20 minutes in, when Brian and C. Ng had gotten their hotel rooms; and Ng seemed to be talking to someone (her mom) on the phone - but Brian could overhear their conversation perfectly via his earphones? Was he tapping the phone line or something?
And what was up with the random dog howling thing, during the car scene? And Brian's overuse of the phrase "I'm good; I'm super, super-good!" And the awkwardness of Rachel McAdams' character?

Just an odd little movie. Not horrible. But not anything I'd really want to watch again.

As far as the car ride, he was howling like a coyote then made a pouty face and said "Im sad" Because during Ng's phone convo with her mother, she referred to him as a Sad City Coyote.
