Looking at the early part of the performance, there is no clue that Frank is anyone other than a math teacher. It's as if no one told Depp that he was Alex until the scene when he opens the safe.
Not sure what good it did to put spoiler in your message when the spoiler has already been seen in the subject line.
shareHe knew from the start, like any actor, unless there were heavy re-writes during shooting (unlikely, but given the rest of the production's problems, not exactly impossible). Not every movie has to have heavy foreshadowing, and in my opinion, Johnny Depp's strength as an actor is in such "twists", in playing a certain role so completely, only to be something completely different.

I totally understand why you ask the question. I agree that there is no hint whatsoever that he is other than some math teacher tourist. There should have been some hints/guessing games to make the character believable (and more interesting). Surprise - twists like that are just bad storytelling when they come out of nowhere and don't really fit with what happened before. If Depp did know before it wasn't the best choice to accept to act the character like it was written in the script.
I hope Depp didn't know before and they told him just before the twist happened. Things like that have happened - but with TV-series - I don't know if they've happended with movies. But I guess he did know from the beginning and liked the twist the way it was. Well ... no one is perfect.

That's the point, that's what his character would've wanted everybody to believe. If he wants to convince everyone he's a math teacher, he wouldn't run around leaving clues and hints that he is anything but an ordinary-looking, boring math teacher

What coincidence? Pearce told her to get that train. And got on it himself too. Sure, she could have picked someone else from the train.
What Depp did was play Frank as Frank. He did what Pearce would have been doing.
