Dumbest Episode That I Ever Saw

OK, wife and I are watching this morning and it was about a young couple looking for a house. He's a Sailor and she's a stay at home mom and they've just returned to the States from Japan where he was stationed. They're in San Diego and due to his veteran status, he qualified for a maximum amount of $315K. Not bad if you ask me but won't get you much in California. Anyhoo, they say what they want and of course the wife wants a mansion and pay nothing for it but even qualifying for over $300K, they can't afford anything more than a condo in SD so it's off to neighboring Chula Vista, a suberb of SD. The first house they look at is just awful and I agree with them that it's a no-go. The 2nd, however, isn't bad. It needs some TLC but nothing too bad. The bathroom needs updating...and a toilet, which they really fret over. I mean, c'mon. You can get a decent toilet for $100 and it will take you 30 minutes to install. The house also needed new carpeting. Again, not a problem. Lowes or Home Depot are always having carpeting specials. They could probably carpet the entire house for about $1000. The house was listed at $270K. A steal for a 3 BR/2 BA house. But no, she doesn't like it. The 3rd house, which listed for $315K they like but are outbid. It goes on to show that they looked at 75 houses and put in 11 offers and were outbid for all. That was the show. The property virgins are still property virgins. What the hell was the point?

I can't get down on the wife for being a stay-at-home mom because her husband is probably not home much and the children need at least one parent in their life.

I'm not sure if I would buy a house missing a toilet. One because I would have to ask why in the heck is the toilet gone? If a toilet is so cheap, how come the sellers didn't install one? At that point I would figure there has been a leak the seller doesn't want to fix...and would walk away.

This is what home inspectors are for. As for toilets, if one leaks, it's usually the wax seal. $5 and that problem is fixed. As to why there wasn't a toilet, I'll tell you one thing if I sold my house tomorrow, my $400 toilet is going with me. :D

like in many parts, the housing market in san diego is pretty horrid. i don't remember 100% but i think that second house was a foreclosure which usually means pissed off ex owners who may take cabinets, toilets, and do a little damage. a few weeks a go, a cop and his real estate agent wife went nuts and completely destroyed their foreclosed home...so a missing toilet and a few minor fixes would be ok in my book.

back to this annoying couple (mainly the wife), my wife and i couldnt help but bash her every single moment we could. living in san diego and looking for a home over the past couple of months, we know how crazy it is to get a home here, so for this loony to be mrs picky? well, their outcome served them right...

after seeing the SD episodes, my wife and i joked on how sandra will probably never come back to san diego cause of this market. just like this episode, my wife and i saw over 30 houses, put like 10 bids, got outdone by cash investors on all the properties we put bids on. but our patience persevered and we got our dream starter condo. we should have been on the show, lol

True. Another thing that bothers me about shows like this and House Hunters is the utter stupidity of the people shopping for a home. In a lot of your big cities, you'll get people saying that they want an older house with "character". Then the realtor shows them a house built in the early part of the 20th century and the first complaint? The rooms are too small. UGH. Hello! Heating issues people. Big rooms are hard to heat back in those days so the rooms were smaller. The 2nd complaint? "These closets are really small". Hello! People back then didn't have 65 pairs of pants and 106 shirts and 472 pairs of shoes and 1,365 belts to go with said shoes. Oy.

Whenever I hear people on these shows say that they need a bigger house to accomodate their "stuff", I always think, "Why don't you just get rid of all of your excess crap?"

reply

I agree! I've never seen a closet on any of these shows that would not easily accommodate my things. I choose not to have excessive clothing, shoes, etc. A huge walk-in closet would be nothing but wasted space for me. I'd much rather have the extra room in a bathroom instead.

reply

What I wouldn't give to hear THIS exchange on one of these shows:

Homebuyer's Wife: "This closet is not big enough to accommodate my 500 pairs of shoes."
Realtor: "Would you care to see the attic?"

reply

"...or the cellar?"

LOL LOL LOL You're bad!

I agree - us Americans have too much stuff. I had to move from a house to an apt when my husband died. I got rid of anything that I hadn't used or worn in over 6 months. It hasn't been easy to adjust but luckily my apt has good closet space. When I see small families wanting 4 and 5 bedroom homes, I can't help but think of homeless people who would be happy with a studio apt.

Too much greed and feelings of entitlement. No wonder the housing market tanked when it did.

So true @ Chiluvr1228. I've never seen that TLC show "Hoarders: Buried Alive" but from the promos I'm beginning to think everyone has a little "Hoard in em'." And like you rightly pointed out, alot of that "stuff" we think is so important, we don't even need or haven't used in like ages. Yet we hold onto it. And it's only when we experience loss that we tend to get that reality check and realize all those material things really aren't worth much at all. And so, like you, I've gone out of my way to try to live my life as simply as possible. And I must say "It's been great." ALOT LESS HEADACHE! lol

Yeah, they just HAVE to live in the heart of downtown so they can be within walking distance to all those restaurants, bars and shops. But they don't want to hear any traffic or see any people. Idiots.

OK 1950's Dad. You had to put in "Of course"?? Why are you married to a woman? Get yourself a man and be happier. All my Dad does is complain about his wives. I tell him the same thing.

I just saw that episode this very morning and I shook my head...

First of all, he's in the military and he said that he will be able to be at home for about 3 years so they want to move into/buy a bigger place versus renting...but THEN what? What happens in the 3rd year when your hubby gets stationed somewhere else? Now you're going to have a home with a mortgage and you have to move...someone enlighten me on why they should even entertain the idea to buy a house?

Secondly, the first house they were shown was too labour intensive for her liking and she didn't like the carpets because they were stained which is understandable but she also complained and didn't like the kitchen cupboards...okay, fine...

So enter the 2nd house they are shown...this place is a bit more promising and according to her, the kitchen cupboards are great, however did anyone notice the cupboards were identical to the ones that were in the first house they looked at that she couldn't stand? Geeze, Louise...

I think fate stepped in and prevented them from buying because they shouldn't be buying...

Reminds me of another couple, Angela and Kenny...he seemed a bit leery about buying because of the commitment and that if anything breaks, the onus is on him now...suddenly he got injured at work while they were in the process of looking so naturally they couldn't get a VA loan anymore...not until he was back at work for 30 days...I really hate to say this but part of me wondering if he injured himself on purpose to get out of buying something? That's a big stretch I know but he didn't seem to be too eager to buy anything...well he wanted to but I think he was just scared...here is the actual story:
