Home Prices in Toronto

I am suprised at the high prices for homes in Toronto! For those small, old houses! True, they are usually updated but I know places here in the U.S. that homes like these can be bought for under 100,000! (or under 50,000, depending on the area) Are people paid well in Toronto? The buyers never seem to balk at the prices of these little homes!

I used to live in New York in a 550 sq.ft. apt. that cost my landlord over a million dollars(it was on the Upper East Side).Everything is relative.Check out Craigslist, you can find real estate for sale in Saskatchewan for $100,000.The houses in Toronto's market are similar to Chicago or Houston as they should be.

reply

Houston housing is WAY cheaper than what's shown in Toronto. Not even close!

Last night I watched an episode of "Income Property", which I believe was filmed in Canada. A couple had their basement renovated (beautifully, I might add) into an apartment. This couple had originally paid over 400,000 for this little house that looked like it was built in the 1940's---I still think home prices in parts of Canada are crazy!

The market in Vancouver is worse. An 800 sq.ft. condo will quite frequently be selling for 500,000 or more depending on location or view.It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world but the market is out of control.

I was surprised as well. That young couple who bought a $600+K home! can't remember if it had parking.

So true. I saw an eposide where this couple were relocating from Montreal to Toronto and how sticker-shocked they were at the housing costs in Toronto.

Yeah the only difference is San Francisco and New York are cool cities and Toronto is just a freezing cold craptown.

reply

LOL Never been to Toronto so I can't speak about it. Now, I've been to Montreal, San Francisco and NY so I agree they are cool cities!

Some of you people should try living in Sydney Australia.

We live 50km from the city and for $500,000 you can own a little 3 bedroom 1 bathroom 1 garage home on a tiny piece of land.

reply

JEEZ man! I've heard about real estate costs in Sydney but didn't know it was THAT bad!

Toronto is right up there with NYC and SF in terms of "coolness".

I'm surprised too. And some of those houses that Sandra pointed out were not even anything to look at on the outside. For that price I could get a mansion just outside LA in a beautiful neighborhood, and the great weather comes with it.

It happened in Salem....USA

Ottawa ON has similar prices for homes as Toronto. For a house in the city, reasonable distance to amenities, downtown, shops, restaurant etc, you would easily pay 300K and more. Even townhomes will go for 300K in Ottawa, depending on the location... If you are lucky, you will get a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, unfinished basement with a tiny little yard for 200K.

I heard the UK is even worst than Australia, normal homes will go for over a million US (so approx 600-700 british pounds)and that is for homes outside of London. I can't even begin to imagine how much homes go for in the city of London!!

We moved from Toronto to the states a few years ago. Toronto is one of the most expensive places in Canada to live. Those "small, old houses" sometimes are in neighborhoods which are very desirable because they are near subways, entertainment district, universities, etc. It's not much different than living in large cities in the US.

I'm surprised at how much money people in Toronto make...and get approved for. That Bar Manager got approved for $300k.
