There are statistics on user voting. The teens and college age give it top scores. While the over 30 group score it around a five.
I would not blame the actors. They did a swell job compared to fan fiction video actors. If they had a higher budget they could call in more professional actors. Perhaps this movie is more of a stepping stone for experience.
The production\post production aspect of the film is done very well.
I still think your stressing out on the script and the story itself. Perhaps the Zen from Last Action Hero movie ... its the story-line and story telling that helps make a great film.
They marketed SyFy, time traveling, a do-over\fix it ... this is very superficial ... it brings down the quality of the script and story because its written like a fan-fic story. Very typically done in low budget formats.
Other syfy movies like back to the future forbid interacting with yourself ... but it is ok to interact in a non-confrontational .. more like a mentor would be a fine thing. The idea is for the young to be led down the path of doing the right thing. You can't make him drink in the truth. This is the mistake of the writer to choose this path. Its more like when Darth Vader says I'm your father. Well here we have to characters that says I'm you. Perhaps this is where we are his with stereotypical fan fic writing.
Yes, there are rather lame story line sales pitches on destiny, change your life, the setup of the characters in this manner really weakens the story almost to the point where the audience would walk out.
But the film is sugar coated with eye candy with with a porn star attributes.
There is one thing I think no one notice. The Dean could also be the producer Abby; the older self. Even thou she doesn't admit it but it seems logical in the structure of this film. Again this kind of setup is weak because we don't see the power of higher-self or twilight zone effect adsorbing us into this journey of self discovery.
Perhaps its worth 4bucks at Walmart but its price is very inflated at 18+ bucks everywhere else. Its a pity that the film wasn't put into theaters to see if it can earn its worth. Perhaps they hope the film will be picked up on the IFM channel where they can earn some additional income for making future films.
I feel that this film is just a stepping stone for the production company. If or when it recognizes the future challenges of getting into the main stream is to wait and see. If they continue the path of fan fic format then they will place themselves in a very exclusive and less profitable market.
Figure this. They have to sell like 50000 DVD plus the ticket sales to prove their film is worth to produce another. Otherwise the investors are in it for loyalty if they get their money back. If they can sell like 90000 dvd then perhaps they can have a promising future in making future productions.
