red herring (spoilers)

I spent almost 2 hours waiting to see what Eva has done so bad that everybody started to hate her so much. But, no she did nothing.
To me it was a big red herring that ruined the movie.

I think it was hinted that she somehow organized his defense and sorted out him being able to get out in only a few years by hiring those expensive lawyers. That's why she sold the house.
That scene of her getting out of the courtroom must mean she either testified in his favor or something. Also there were some mentions of supposed pills he was taking, another lie she might've said in the courtroom in his favor.

I think this as well.

As a minor and her dependent i think she may have been legally obligated to pay his legal fees, and i think her bracket would have put her in the 'upper class' market of affordable representation. She also mentioned (possibly only in the book) that she always hated the house and was happy to sell it. As her own devil's spawn and her bizarre attachment to Kevin regardless of what he ever did, she would have still felt compelled to at least pay for the most competent lawyers... BUT:

She expressed disgust at how he planned an early release. He organised getting on Prozac or increasing his dose weeks before he did it, and he arranged the time frame himself on getting tried as a minor. She's very snide when she comments on how well he orchestrated everything himself. I don't remember anything at all about her testifying in his favor. I don't think she covered for him at all but yes, she would have supplied him with very respectable lawyers if nothing else.

While I hadn't even noticed the details achille mentions in his post (and which make sense), I have a relative that's in jail for murder and a lot of family members won't talk to her mother anymore.

When someone gets killed, people will blame anyone and everyone.

This brings up the old "nature v. nurture" debate, I'm simply assuming everyone in the movie who hates her are on the "nurture" side of things, while we see the wheelchair-bound kid who seems not to blame her at all, whatsoever when he talks to her.

I agree with both points brought up here. Some people would hate and harass Eva simply for being the mother. However after her daughter and husband were also killed I would think people would also be sympathetic towards her.

So I mostly agree with the point that she may have hired her son good lawyers and helped him get a shorter sentence. Additionally we see her visiting Kevin so I'm sure people know about it. She probably went to all of his trial as well. If people felt she was sympathetic towards Kevin they would probably continue to harass her. I think if she appeared to disown and cease contact with Kevin they may not be as mean to here if only for the fact Kevin also murdered her family.

Honestly if I knew someone with her past I probably couldn't entirely symphatize or see her as a victim either. I would speculate what happened in her family behind closed doors that made her son do something so mindlessly violent.

reply

I thought it was just because she was the mother of Kevin, and that those women who hated her were the mothers of the victims.

People tend to blame the parents of the shooter whenever there's a school shooting. There's an assumption that they were bad parents

reply

I wouldn't say that. It's not like we saw Eva show a lot of compassion and love for her baby. They say the first five years of a person's life is the most important as it shapes who they'll be.
