Considering her husband and daughter were both murdered, and her son is a murderer in jail, I don't understand why people are so awful to Eva??

I get that her son killed their kids, but it wasn't HER, it was Kevin. Even if she wasn't a good parent, it's still not her fault what her son did, and she lost so much too!

Surely in real life, people would be more compassionate? Does the book go into any detail about why people are so awful to her?
