Bobcatpizza: You're right. The bizarre scheduling--apparently typical now on cable networks--is largely responsible for the show's demise. I long ago decided that I would not allow myself to get attached to a program, due to the capricious nature of television.

reply

I love the show, and while it's cancellation does suck, it's understandable. The show just didn't catch on with viewers. The ratings declined as soon as the show started. That 5 month break they took halfway through this season also didn't help, but I kinda think the show was headed that way, regardless.

Check out the full series ratings.

Season 1
1)5.4M
2)4.4M
3)3.7M
4)3.1M
5)3.1M
6)2.9M
7)2.3M
8)2.3M
9)2.1M
10)2.6M

Season 2
1)2.4M
2)2.2M
3)2.3M
4)2.3M
5)2.1M
6)3.3M
7)1.8M
8)1.3M
9)1.4M
10)1.5M
11)1.5M
12)1.7M

The series fell below 2M viewers after it came back from it's break and stayed there.I don't understand that. Most shows on TNT, USA, Syfy and ABC Family that have at least 12 episodes takes a 3-4 month break halfway through, yet they don't drop off like that.

This is such *beep* It's pretty clear from the weekly ratings that the split season completely killed the show. It went from 3.3 in week 6 to 1.8 in the 2nd half of the season! Anyone can look at this and figure out what happened.

And why do this before the Emmys?

What if Andre wins for Best Supporting Actor? Wouldn't that increase ratings?

Stupid, stupid move by TNT!

reply

yeah, doesn't take a genius... episode 6 was the most watched of the season, could have kept those numbers without that stupid split.
such a shame.

reply

Finally a TV show that I can FULLY relate with and it is terminated.

It was the scheduling too. That was just plain DUMB how TNT showed the episodes in 6 show blocks.
Then take months off before starting up again....

Think OutSide of the 'Box'!

Well, like tazmaniak pointed out, that's exactly how Leverage, Psych, Burn Notice, Royal Pains, White Collar, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Pretty Little Liars, Make It or Break It, Eureka and Sanctuary are aired, but it doesn't impact their ratings that much.

As he also pointed out, the ratings have fallen since the pilot. The show lost nearly 3M viewers from the pilot to the first season finale. And they aired all 10 episodes without any breaks.

I do believe, for whatever reason, this show just didn't catch on with everyone.

reply

Except that's not how Men of a Certain Age aired. It's first season was a complete run and from midway of the first season, when it's viewership settled, to the second season break has been more or less consistant. Only after six months off did the ratings have such a steep drop.

reply

I never knew when the show was coming back, and very little advertising is what killed this show. I loved it, but if you don't know it's on, you can't watch it.

Bummer.

reply

The future of television scheduling is the way USA and TNT do it now, a short batch of episodes, time off, another series of episodes. The 22 to 24 episode series starting in September and ending in May is going the way of the dodo.

I'm totally bummed that the show got cancelled!

ok guys.. no need to BASH Franklin and Bash.. just cause "Men" got the axe.. I am sorry for it.. I LOVE the cast... and its the reason.. well actually.. was Bakula, cause I was not really a Romano fan.. and Braugher.. I only knew from FX's one season show "Theif" and a few films..

I know that Bash and Men.. are not the SAME kind of show.. but I ejnoy BOTH.. just for the fact.. that both have actors I quite enjoy.. Malcolm McDowell can make ALMOST anything better... and he's a great center for the show.. and I enjoy the Asst. Pendar as well (his real name escapes me).. and I also enjoy Gosselaar and Meyer.. have for years.... its not exactly going to set the world afire.. but some shows you just want to watch and KNOW you can have a fun time... and that's all there is to it.

Sucks to have to lose "Men" though.. I am not to that age yet. but.. not alot, of any, shows dealing with how people age.. and how.. its not over yet.. that's been a MAJOR thing.. that just cause they're older.. its NOT over.. there's always another act... and its been great to watch... too bad TNT sees the need to kill the show off though.. but something happened.. this last 6 episodes those ratings just SLID.. I think it may have to be with.. that NO ONE actually really knew the show was coming back.. I would have had ZERO idea if not for my DVR..

It most certainly IS a good reason to bash Franklin and Bash. There's only a finite amount of programming and ad dollars up for grabs, and when something as empty and vapid like F&B gets them, with what certainly has to be higher production costs, and it takes up a slot and remains on the air, it tells network execs and producers not to bother with airing shows with quality writing. Just shoot for the lowest common denominator and you'll get the ratings. Screw that. That's how to regress to the mean and lose quality TV.

reply

Don't worry, Leverage isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

But, as far as MOACA being canceled, I'm pretty upset myself. I found out about it in a Parade magazine article not too long ago (around Father's day of this year), and decided to tune in.

Almost a month later, it gets the axe. I'm surprised ratings even count on a regular cable channel, unlike the major networks such as NBC, CBS, ABC, etc.

Errr.

Men of a Certain Age is one of the smartest, entertaining programs of the last decade. Great acting, incredible writing and perfectly cast. This is a mistake to pull this amazing show from the airwaves. Maybe TNT did not invest enough promotion for this consistently incredible show that topped itself week after week. This is an insult to not only the fans to not be able to see the characters and plotlines develop but for the actors, writers and crew that put so much work into this amazing show. TNT needs to rethink this poor decision and renew Men of a Certain Age or another network should pick it up. In a television world of mindless programs and endless reality shows, Men of a Certain Age stood out above the rest. From the opening scene to the final credits, Men of a Certain Age was a true gem.

Lets start a campaign for TNT or another Network to pick up the show.

Yup, this all just makes me almost want to give up TV shows, sitcoms, dramas. Even reality.

I could just about unplug the TV.

I blame TNT for this, interrupting the second season, bringing the remaining unaired episodes back over the summer - downtime for many fans - is the kiss of death.

You killed it TNT, long before this announcement. Shame, shame, shame on you TNT!

reply

Yea...for hour long dramas that delve into long story arcs....6 episodes really blows man...you need at least 10 solid episodes per season uninterrupted.

The first season was ok...but we had to get to know the characters which took some time. The 2nd season overall was actually better than the first, but the general public wouldn't know it because TNT killed the show by splitting the season off like it did. The last 6 episodes were all awesome and not 1 episode was boring or bad in anyway. Even being unselfish for my viewing pleasure, i feel the cast/crew are getting stiffed on this because you can tell they put in alot of effort for this show.....all for nothing now....bunch of punks over at TNT.

I'm pissed. One of the few great shows left on television and it gets cancelled just like that.

Well everyone, enjoy your Glee and Jersey Shore garbage.

Yeah, I am so disappointed I'm about to give up all TV (except for Modern Family, Big Bang Theory and Survivor, I will watch Survivor until it goes off the air).

It truly is discouraging when you find an excellent and unique premise like this show was and then it's not treated fairly (still upset at interrupting Season 2).

reply

This is horrible news. I really hope someone else picks the show up for at least 2 more seasons. If they wanted to keep it on the air longer, they would have made Joe a doctor, Owen a cop and Terry a vampire and have them sleeping with someone new every episode.

It wasn't the best show I've ever seen, it did drag in parts, but it was a damn good one. I'll be holding out hope that another channel wants a quality show.

reply

Hey, don't forget TNT's bringing back Dallas!

reply

Drama has come a long way in the 12 years on television. As for the soap operas it's going the way of canary. So I'm not going to be shocked if the show is just a guilty pleasure.

TNT- WE DON'T KNOW DRAMA

Outside of having a big core audience on basic cable. With the exception of Southland and The Closer. None of TNT lineup is really more than water down drivel you can already find on broadcast TV. Idea of scripted programming venture for less money and more production time you can get a better programming. TNT has shown that all it can produce is the same low quality show you find on broadcast.
