ETA members

Why does the government care what happens to the ETA members that are taken hostage? Are they scared of reprisals from the ETA? Didn't fully understand this part.

reply

The spanish government made an agreement with the País Vasco to not harm the prisoners. International relations stuff, yes ETA could retaliate if the prisoners are harmed too.

This is not a signature!

Cause Spain is obviously an enemy of the U.S.

They did retaliate in the movie as seen on the news...a bombing in Madrid.

Jan 25, 2011 the day it all started. Walk like an Egyptian or just protest like one!

reply

I believe is to avoid consequences:

-Retaliation by ETA
-Example to other prisons to follow
-Political consequences with el gobierno Vasco

reply

The movie explicitly tells us that bombings from ETA happened following the riot, so clearly the authorities were concerned at worse happening.

Presumably ETA has a deal with the government that their guys aren't messed around with in jail and in return ETA goes easy on the bombings. A similar agreement was in place in real life between the IRA and British government.

When darkness overcomes the heart, Lil' Slugger appears...

I'm spanish, and it's even funny reading certain answers to the question of this thread :)

Regarding the original question, our goverment cares because of the same reasons any goverment with terrorists in their jails would care: avoiding political and social conflicts.

Ciao.

Where was the compromise between Franco and Hitler? Hitler helped Franco come into power in the first place.

The ETA is not a regular terrorist organisation like Al Quaeda, they represent a part of the spanish population. The Basques want their own state and fight the spanish government to gain independence. You can't compare that to islamic terrorism.

LOL.

Bluesdoctor, you obviously have no clue about Spanish recent history, 11-M or ETA. Your nonsense comment is a clear indicator of your ignorance, and of your lack of respect for the people who lost their lives on those trains.

You would be amusing if you weren't so insulting.

Stop embarrasing yourself.

Again, stop embarrasing yourself.

1) Congratulations on finding information about ETA in the Wikipedia. However, as a Spaniard, I think my knowledge on that subject highly overcomes yours.

That said, please indicate the part of my post where I deny that ETA is and has always been a terrorist organization. Look for it, it must be there, somewhere... or maybe it's only in your mind? That's what I thought. Your first point is therefore both stupid and invalid. 1-0.

2) The Islamist terrorist attack on the Madrid TRAINS (there were four of them, to be exact) had its intended effect of killing almost 200 innocent people. PSOE's rise to power had to do more with the lies of Aznar's government about the authorship of the attacks, which prompted numerous civil demonstrations. And again, the new government did neither "appease" nor "placate" the terrorists. The surviving authors (those who didn't blow themselves up in Leganés) were brought to justice, and sentenced to jail for the rest of their lives. Spain's commitment with fighting international terrorism became stronger than ever, and more Spanish troops were sent to Afghanistan. So your second point is absurdly ignorant. And what's worse, by applying that logic, you're implying that Spanish people are willing to compromise with terrorists over the bodies of their just-killed brothers. Wow. Even more stupid than the previous one, and also insunting and offensive. 2-0.

3) The only personal attack here has been carried out by you, in your laughable attempt to offend me by the use of the word "puto" (which may be offensive to a 10-year-old Mexican, but not in Spain, where that word is not used; try "gilipollas" next time). In my original comment I was calling you an embarrasing ignorant: ergo, defining you. You were the one who came up with the insults. 3-0.

Please make 6 points in your next post so I can bagel you.

You really have no idea of anything about Spain. Basically, you sound more offending than anything else.

I don't know where did you get that information but point 1's references have been removed so you cannot know if that is true or not. Then, why did you posted it? We are from Spain and we do know if that's true or false.

Second, on point 2, your source is completely wrong, meaning that the one who wrote/told you this had no clue on Spanish recent history.

Besides, you think that putolanga's username is a "personal attack against someone you disagree" because it contains 'puto'... really? It seems as if you don't know how to discredit a Spaniard's opinions and true points exposed here, just because you don't want to believe them.

Moreover, you seem to think that you know much more things about ETA, Franco and Hitler, terrorism and politics in Spain than the Spaniards themselves, but the truth is that you don't.

I can only give you an advice: next time you want to post something about terrorism and politics about any country, please contrast different reliable sources about it.

The ETA hasn't changed. A younger generation of them set off bombs aimed at foreign tourists on the island of Majorca in 2009.

I can only think to compare this to the Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the man responsible for the deaths of 270 people in the "lockerbie bombing". Jailed in the UK for life. It was important to the UK and US governments, victims families and general societies view point that this man faced jail.

Had he been part of a riot and held prisoner during that time, there would have been a big fall out for the UK, US and Libya (there was when he was freed on compassionate grounds at the end of his life).

It was part of what made this film interesting - things are never so clear cut. There was wrong everywhere you looked but no easy answers.
