Why did they tell Malamadre that...? SPOILER

Why did the negotiator tell Malamadre, that Juan is one of the guards? That just puts Juan in danger, and Juan cannot keep up his charade anymore and be a possible asset to the outside. I don't get at all why they did that, unless I missed something?

reply

I guess they thought Juan became unstable after finding out his wife died (he acted weird, demanded stuff like a con, etc) and that he could actually help the convicts with his knowledge of the prison system. Weird, anyway.

reply

Wouldn't they assume that Juan was just acting and still being part of the charade? It seems to me that they would have to get serious permission from hire up legal people before they can rat out a guard or undercover person to the bad guys. Unless the Spanish legal system is different and cops are allowed to give up their own that easily, if they think it will do the slight possibility of good??

You missed some important parts of the plot:

There was a second or lets say real snitch and as we learn in the end of the movie it was Apache. Taken from other thread:

"I think Apache didn't like him because he was a liar. Juan passed off as an inmate and Apache found out. When he went to threaten Juan, Juan said he'd blackmail him to Malamadre and tell Malamadre that Apache is a snitch. For this reason, Apache hated Juan and when all hell broke lose, he killed him and tried to kill Malamadre because he could get away with it."
"Apache made a deal with the negotiator, kill both juan and malamadre and protect etarras for earlier release/special treatment, that's why colombians kill all malamadre's crew when police break in."
"Apache was shocked that Malamadre was alive, because that means Apache's a dead man (since Malamadre now knows it was Apache who was the informer).

Okay thanks, but how do we know that the negotiator made a deal with Apache, since we never actually saw it? Plus it would be difficult for Apache to meet with the negotiator without anyone noticing.

... how do we know that the negotiator made a deal with Apache ...
The negotiator you are discussing is not a negotiator! He is Utrilla, the head police guard who hit Elena, and who is suspended and asked to leave the prison and told he will never get a job in prisons again. He goes rogue and tries to sort something out with Malamadre to get back his job. This involves among other things ratting on Juan, who kills him when he finds out the truth about Elena.🐭

no! juan was betrayed twice!

1) by the guard who has beaten his wife.
2) one of the police chiefs put a folder of personal informations about juan at Malamadre´s walking passage.
they wanted that he kills juan and offered him to get free earlier, if he betrays his own people in prison.
so, the system betrayed one of their own people, cause they were afraid of him and his cleverness, with which he would be able to really change something.
better kill one of their own than changing a system

juan was there without guilt
and still he found out that what the prisoners are trying to get is just to be treated correct.
juan switched the side and he would have been clever enough to reach the goals.
(minister has to speak on tv and so on...)
if juan doesnt get killed, he - as someone who is like everybody else outside the prison - would also be a person of high interest and highly believable after the prison riot. he would speak about the problems on tv
and high politicans would loose their might,
so juan has to be silenced
