Why did Juan keep passing up his chances to escape?

In the movie, why did Juan, the guard, not want the SWAT team to come in to save him? He kept doing things to keep the SWAT out. Such as when a prisoner murdered another prisoner on camera, he got the prisoners to hide the body, so the people on the camera would not see him so they wouldn't come in. The SWAT team believes that one of the basque terrorist prisoners being held hostage may have been the one who was killed, so Juan goes and gets the terrorists and puts them in front of the camera, to keep the SWAT team out.

Later on, the prisoners leading the revolt are going to kill one of the hostages, to show they mean business. Juan tells them that that is a mistake and they should cut off the hostage's ear instead, cause at least that way, the SWAT team will not come in.

I do not understand. Juan wants the cops to come in and save him obviously, but he keeps jeopardizing all his chances to get out. Why?

Maybe he thought the swat team would go after him too?

Sure it's a risk but if he puts his hands up and gets down on the ground, he is still safer from the SWAT team, compared to being in prison with the prisoners.

I think it was for 2 reasons. 1 I think he actually feels he may be able to pull off a negotiated outcome with an absolute minimum of violence to both hostages and prisoners. Kind of a win/win.

2. As the poster mentioned previously I don't think he felt his own personal security could be guaranteed in the event of a SWAT operation. With hindsight that is pretty understandable, considering what happened to him, both in the beginning and the end.🐭

"i am the reason that 200 people died, but okay, at least i am alive!"
wtf?!
not all people are egomaniacs and that egoistic
and think prisoners are just garbage.
i am afraid, you missed a mainpoint of the film

They wouldn't blame Juan for killing 200 people. All I said was, Juan just had to allow Malamadre to kill the terrorist prisoner, instead of suggesting that they cut off his ear instead. If Juan would have allowed to happen, the police wouldn't blame him. They would just think it was out of his control.

Same with choosing not to put the terrorists in front of the camera, before. If he chose not to put him in front, the police are not going to blame him for having to raid.
