Fly fishing versus 'wormers'

I wonder if the book explained why H2O, a fly-fishing enthusiast, and Ma, a "wormer," switched methods of fishing. In the last scenes of the movie Ma is tying a fly and then fly fishing with Eddy, while H2O is seen emerging from the bank with a rod that has a float attached to the line.

I didn't read the book, but after watching the movie, I thought it meant that the parents resolved their feud. Each accepted the other's approach to fishing.

is there nudity in the movie?

reply

None at all, as far as I can remember.

ok thx

I might be wrong about that. This Outside magazine article (http://outside.away.com/outside/culture/200902/river-why-amber-h
eard-zach-gilford-1.html) says that there was some nudity. I'll have to watch the movie again (and not just to verify that information; it was a good movie).

I don't know how that fits together but it's rated TVPG but it says brief nudity in the describtion on showtime.

amber heard's character eddy is skinny dipping in an early scene, though she stays underwater. later theres a love making scene but nothing graphic. This is a great wholesome movie. A refreshing change from the typical horror/shoot-em-up violence flicks

Warning, spoilers glore.

It runs deeper than simply Caroline and Hen accepting the validity of the other's style of fishing. Think of fishing being an allegory of life in general. They were always devoted to each other but not very accepting of each other's views. Gus was the catlyst in the process when he blew up at the table, threw Nijinski in the fire, and stormed out.

I have watched this movie perhaps a dozen times and I never fail to go misty-eyed at the ending. There is great depth to this movie. If you make the effort to look beneath the surface, just as in fishing, you will find a world made better through kindness and love. The one word I would use to describe "The River Why" is "gentle".

Agreed. There are many undercurrents to this film; subtle under stories that are told only through visuals and not many words.

All in all, this is a typical story about a young man trying to find his way in the world. He has an overbearing father, and he's lived in his father's shadow for years. He finally breaks free to find his own way in this world, and his father, a truly stubborn man, finally finds it in himself to change.

Told very well in visuals, more so than in words. Which is really hard for most directors to portray when translating words of a book onto a movie screen.
