Don't get me wrong, it had some very nice photography, and that montage of them making love was quite beautiful, and I did have a laugh when that family of hill billies were all over him in his car, but in the end I just couldn't understand what this movie was trying to say. Could anyone please enlight me?

I didn't get a big "ta-da" moral at the end of the movie either. But, to me, it was about finding out who you are and what pleases you and makes you happy.
Gus could have had a decent life if he'd stayed at home, but he went off in search of himself and all he really wanted to do was fish because it made him happy. And he wanted to be loved by a woman who made him feel something that he'd never felt before.
