a Black L? LOL (i've seen it all now.. lol)

Not racist at all.... even my buddies who are 'black' say this is a bad choice.

Jap version is and always will be the best...

they could of at least got the original L FOR THIS USA VERSION... would of been awesome.

reply

Isn't L supposed to be from Europoor? Hilarious.

He looks less like he's making a statement about Kira and more like he's promoting his new mixtape.

"Yo yo yo hear me no hear me no dis cracka ass whiteboi Kira be killin dem brothas, so buy mah new LP "Bustin a cap on dat ass" so we can bust a nut on tha *beep*

Some BODY once told me.

reply

alexanderthekaiser, you're one racist idiot and yet complain about unfair representation of Asians? Jesus.

reply

I would've made a different joke if this L guy didn't gave that impression. But he does, he does look like he's there to promote his *beep* mixtape. And it's pretty accurate considering how he was in that abomination Straight Outta Talent.

I can't wait to hear the first single from his album

"You see that *beep* writin'
You feel the heart stoppin'
*beep* now you Dying"

Some BODY once told me.

reply

Straight Outta Compton was not an abomination. This is an inaccurate assessment of a fairly good film. Come on now.

reply

It's not Fairly Good. It's fairly *beep*

Some BODY once told me.

reply

"I would've made a different joke if this L guy didn't gave that impression."

Yes. That what was why he called you racist, because L gave you that impression. It's up to YOU what impression a character makes on you.

reply

So let me get this straight: L gives the impression of your average, generic gangsta *beep* from the hood instead of being a weirdo detective and somehow I'm wrong. Hilarious.

And now, a Haiku by the movie version of L

Ayo lemme holla
Ayo girl, you with the fat ass
Aiight *beep* you then

Some BODY once told me.

reply

He didn't give me that impression at all.

reply

Seems they didn't learn anything from the last Fantastic Failure Four..... what a shame.

reply

One of the great things about L was his weird quirks, and I just feel like they won't be able to do it with this guy. I feel like they'll just make him some smart serious detective and not have any essence of the character. I hope they do, but I have a feeling this movie is gonna end up like shat. When's the last time we had a good movie based on an anime. I like the William Defoe casting and Misa, but everything else doesn't look promising.

reply

About the weird quirks. Its a must but depends on the writing of course, but I suggest you watch a couple of episodes of a new series called Atlanta. The actor cast as L plays a character that can mildly described as scene stealing aloof quirky, and he does it so effortlessly natural.

The whole idea of American remake is odd to me, but don't sell this actor short yet, he has it in him to suprise a lot imo.

That is if the script or directing, which I honestly doubt alot more then the casting.

reply

Was just coming to say what the reply above me did. He was good in SOoC, but his performance in "Atlanta" makes me really excited to see what he does with L.

"Call me in about a week."
"So it could be cancer? Hey, doc. You don't be a stranger either."

I can understand not liking this particular actor for the role but you'll have to explain to me why his race matters?

reply

People condemn whitewashing of characters, no matter what the reasoning is yet turning a character who isn't black into a black character is completely fine? I don't like it because it completely changes who L is in this adaptation, I personally wanted a more faithful L even if the idea of them doing it is a laugh considering all the other changes they're making.

reply

How does L being black completely change him? Black dudes can't be weird and quirky?

reply

He looks like he's ready to bust a cap on some bloods.

Some BODY once told me.

reply

Yeah, cuz that's the thing about "L" he looks so much like an investigator...

There's no such thing as the establishment. Everyone knows that!

reply

Everyone major had their races changed other than Watari. So I dunno why L would be singled out in this movie. I was shocked at first but I actually found his quirkiness matched. When almost everyone else changed race I couldn't fixate on his when I found his performance to be better than the 2 leads.

reply

I think it's the way they introduce him that is flawed. He is in Japan, speaks Japanese, has an assistant/collaborator who is Japanese but he is black. One could say he was in Japan because he was working in a case, he speaks the language because he speaks so many others (maybe?) but it kind of doesn't make much sense. And then there are all these Asian people in the background, among students, crowds, everywhere! It seems like they couldn't decide what to do about the cultural background of the story. They should have gone all in and pick at least one Asian actor/actress for the main characters or carry on with the idea that the story is set in America with American characters and leave all the Japanese/Asian references out.

reply

Hopefully when this comes out, we'll get to see what African American critics think of L being black.

reply

Yeah Definitely a very bad choice... but they miss the mark with a white Light..
