New Set Pics of Light (Nat Wolff)

http://www.whatsfilming.ca/2016/07/15/nat-wolff-filming-netflix-movie-death-note-in-vancouver-photos/?platform=hootsuite

(Please don't talk about whitewashing in this thread, you are free to talk about it in more relevant threads, but I would rather have a different kind of discussion)

These are set pics of Nat on set for the film. What do you guys think?

I personally don't like the idea of Light being a smoker. But as far as looks go, I have very mixed feelings. His hair is what makes me question if I like what they're going for or not.

reply

He looks nothin like Light

I just saw these lol you beat me to the punch ?. Anyway idk I'm glad he dyed his hair but I kinda wanted him to be a red head :(. He's trying a little hard in these pics though. I have mixed feelings :(.

That photo looks nice. But honestly he looks douchy like the Mark Zuckerberg character in The Social Network. Light is supposed to be a wolf in sheeps clothing. He should be good looking and charismatic. Think of Matt Bomer's character in White Colar. You are not supposed to know that this guy is dangerous. Wolf just looks like a weasel.

If they're Americanizing this rendition couldn't they have gotten a tall white actor by American standards?

"American" does not mean "white". There are many, many nonwhite Americans and Asian Americans do exist despite people like you wanting to pretend they don't.

Gotta love how people judge an entire performance of an actor from still photos.

He doesn't look like Light from the manga, he doesn't need to. Light is no Goku, he doesn't have anything iconic that needs to be visually displayed. The only thing that's important about his physical appearance is that he's quite handsome with a smug expression and I see that in the photos. Sure Light doesn't smoke, but we're shifting this to a more American setting. Maybe it's more common for American teenagers to smoke than japanese ( can't confirm, I'm neither), gotta account for cultural differences. Maybe he's trying to fit in. Maybe I'm putting too much thought into this, maybe we all are.

All I'm interested in is the lighting behind Nat. Them neon tubes suggest that Adam Wingard sure as hell is going to retain the trippy visuals from The Guest.

reply

I wouldn't really say I was judging the actor based on one photo, I was just giving my opinion on that photo alone. I needed more time to think about that, and now that I have, I just don't care, as long as the movie is fine, it doesn't matter.

You are completely right BTW. I think that people seem to forget that this is just a character (fake) not some historical figure.

People think that if they do something different from the source material than it's automatically going to suck. However, there are a lot of movie adaptations that differ greatly from their source and are actually really good, like The Mask, Forrest Gump, Adaptation.

Seriously, nobody likes to give Hollywood a chance, not to mention that the crew on this film is phenomenal. (Adam is my favorite director working today).

reply

Lol hey man, I wasn't pointing at you. Just the overall thread in general.

Gotta love the hypocrisy of you having a problem with others not liking this movie based on the information out so far but apparently it's completely fine for you to be supportive of the movie based on the same amount of information.

And why is that? Oh, yeah, because you are supporting white supremacy and think you can get away with it by communicating in code.

reply

Gotta love how you think I am supporting white supremacy just because I don't have a problem with this whole issue.

I'm from India, which is a part of Asia. I'm Asian. The criticism of Asian characters being white-washed should affect me, but it doesn't. Because I get that this is a complete American Adaptation much in the same vein as "Magnificent Seven" is to "Seven Samurai". It most likely will deal with the American point of view when it comes to extreme punishment by the hands of a vigilante vs lawful punishment.

This isn't the same case as Exodus: Gods And Kings where you had white actors in non-white roles in a totally egyptian setting. This is very much an American setting. It's an adaptation. Now, on the other hand, had they set this in japan and THEN cast a white actor while the rest of them were japanese, that I'd have a problem with.

I'm just excited that we have a talented director (I LOVED The Guest and Blair Witch seems to be getting crazy buzz, a great horror director is just right for this project) behind this. This isn't like Dragonball Evolution. If we get a great Death Note movie, it only benefits the manga. There's seriously no downside to the success of this.

Doesn't matter. There are nonwhites that have been brainwashed to also support white supremacy.

"American" doesn't mean "white". America is almost 40% nonwhite. There is no reason to whitewash.

By the way, Magnificent Seven didn't have an all white cast. The plot of that movie had to do with protecting Latinos.

If we get a great Death Note movie, it only benefits the manga.

No, it doesn't. The manga is already a huge success as is. A whitewashed movie like this being successful will only continue the idea that nonwhite Americans do not matter and that white supremacy should be the norm when it comes to cinema.

reply

Dude WTF, I said no whitewashing comments, and there you go saying the same thing in every single thread.

I'm not trying to censor you or anything, nor am I saying you're wrong, but I don't want this thread to be a few pages of people yelling racist at each other. If you wanted to talk about whitewashing then talk about it in a relevant thread.

You could say you don't like the actors because of their ethnicity and what not, but please don't go to an argument because it just looks like you're looking for a fight.

reply

You're kidding. If this is really what you want then you would've called out udit_dlordx when you replied to him. He was talking about physical appearances. What do you thin that entails?

I'll do you a favor though since you seem to be asking in a reasonable fashion. If udit_dlordx does not reply back to me here, then I won't continue the whitewashing issue on this thread as long as he doesn't continue talking about physical appearances and whatnot.

reply

Um... L is black so all your white supremacy talk is null and void... just wanted to point that out

reply

Umm... Light was whitewashed and L was only made black to make it seem there isn't any racism which is done plenty of times in whitwashed movies (e.g. Dragonball Evolution whitewashed Goku so they did token nonwhite casting with Chow Yun Fat and African American actor Ernie Hudson).

Just wanted to point that out...

JonBonDon is a famous troll who I think has been proven insane by many posters on IMDb.
I know I'm 3 months late but I share your confusion when he accuses people of being white supremacist.
I myself is a Korean and yet he keeps calling me a white male who pretends to be an Asian online so I can post racist coments.

hey look japan is making a live action fma movie with all japanese actors set in a european setting, like people like to talk about whitewashing n all this *beep* people will make movies as they please, you either watch it or you don't you ain't footing the bill for it so let them cast whoever they wish, it is their money to do with as they please. Most anime have characters that resemble westerners way more then easterns only difference is the setting, all this talk about omg its a *beep* anime we must have only japanese people as their live action counterparts is getting old as *beep*. Watch the *beep* or don't seriously if you want something the way you want it then you go foot the bill and do as you please but until then stop complaining.

ON TOPIC NOW, it is a photograph doesn't tell much and iirc netflix got the rights to it so i think this will turn out really good given their track record with above average titles, as long as WB doesn't touch it all will end well.

reply

It's very telling that JohnBonDon didn't respond to your FMA example of "yellowwashing", with how he consistently responded to all the other replies to him. It heavily undermines his "Only Americans are racist" argument. FMA even only has a few Asians as part of the plot, so it's definitely that most of the cast is European/white.

Oh, and the Attack On Titan movie(s) yellowwashed a largely European cast too, even though there being so few Asians is a manga plot point. I don't see JohnBonDon talking about those.

Same as the American DN movie, you adapt and cast based on the kinds of people who live in your country. America is predominantly white and black, so we get a white and black cast for our DN movie. Likewise for the FMA and AoT movies being adapted by Japan and using Japanese people despite the ethnicities of the cast being largely Western.

In fact, you could make a strong case that ethnicities matter more in Attack on Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist than in Death Note and Dragon Ball. Ethnicity is not a plot point in DN and DB like it in FMA and AoT. DB's set on an alternate Earth, and DN is more of a global story than a story about Japan.

So yeah, where's JohnBonDon to respond to you?

I like the kid kid but why dye his hair blonde? His real hair color was a fine already!

reply

When I looked him up on the IMDB page, I thought he could be a good match for Light, but the photos actually make me sceptic. Since I don't know the context of the scene, I won't put too much into it (maybe it wasn't even filming but the kid being on a break? Maybe he smokes? Who knows) but I don't get a "Light vibe" from those photos. I haven't seen the actor in anything yet, though, so I can't judge his screen presence.

reply

He looks like a smug jerk that I want to punch, so he definitely looks like Light. I can't tell if the smoking is from filming or between takes, in-character or out-. Making Light a smoker would be an easy way to show that Light isn't a good person, as cheap a plot device as it is these days.

Light doesn't look or come across like the kind of guy you want to 'punch in the face'. Like I mentioned before his villainy is the kind of thing that slowly comes out. This guy screams 'I'm an a********'! Don't trust me!

Cheese and rice, the director from Blair Witch and the Guest is doing this. The show's going to suck for sure. I'll wait for the re-make.
