Why Movie Lovers Need This Movie

In my opinion, I, as a movie lover, needed this movie.

I'm getting to the point that the genres are so formulaic that I can predict a movie's direction by the marketing, DVD/Blu Ray Cover, and the first five minutes of the movie itself, these days. I hate to sound cynical and bitter, but I'm starting to feel as though I just don't want to watch movies anymore as a passion, because of this.

But along comes a movie like this, I hear about via a recommendation, and all of a sudden I like watching movies again. The plot was pleasantly surprising and for something that seemed unlikely and implausible to me, the writing and acting made it completely believable, and organic...and made me think that it wasn't really all that unlikely to begin with.

Bravo.

I had no problems with any of the actors, I liked them all in their roles. Emmy Rossum is exquisite, IMO.

Hi, Beck! I'm glad you liked the film. I played Alan Berger, Ashley Springer's Dad, in the film. We had a great time working with Emmy and Ana and Adam Salky and David. I feel the same way about the movie and was glad to hear your comments! If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Thanks for posting!

OP: You took the words out of my mouth.

I too, used to love movies in my high school and college years (late 90s through early 00s), but lately I've been disillusioned.

This movie was a little gem: it didn't have the usual "indie" cliches that turn me off (overly quirky character traits or scenarios, etc.). It just captured something so essential, visceral, and universal: just a desire to CONNECT, best exemplified obviously through Johnny.

I love how sparse but internally rich the story was. Well done. I don't get the low rating on here? Geez.

This was a great, understated character study. It wasn't perfect (the scene between Johnny and his stepmom was a little forced, to show "exposition", the girl who played Alexa was trying too hard to be square in the beginning).

Overall, glad I watched it. We need more unpretentious but thoughtful movies like this.

Must agree with you. I almost passed on this because of the stupid title and description that promoted it as a film where stupid teens dare each other into ever more stupid acts. The film wasn't like that or about that at all. And, yes, I'm not sure I've ever seen a film with a protagonist (Johnny) exactly like this one - and how rare is that ? A real underappreciated gem.
