Better Than the Original Short Film?

Hi everyone. So I've been waiting for this film to come out for a while now, I'll have to watch it now that it's out. I'm a huge fan of the original short, saw it years ago when it was part of Boys Life 5. However, the original was more about homosexuality and eroticism. I saw the trailer for the film and it looks like it's more about the girl and the popular jock than the gay nerd. I'm assuming they're the same characters? And also, Adam Flemming was way more attractive than the guy they casted in the part for the film. So, what I'm asking is, is the film as good or better than the original? I feel as though I may be disapointed...

I'm a fan of the short too, so I was skeptical about the film, but it was surprisingly decent I thought. It's quite different from the short in that the characterization has been altered and the focus seems to be mostly on Johnny. The development of Alexa's character was interesting, and Alan Cumming's one scene was amazing to watch. What struck me most was how serious and depressing the film turned out to be (not in a bad way). The short was definitely more light-hearted. I didn't find it to be necessarily better or worse than the short, because it stands on its own really well. When the pool scene came on in the movie, I sort of found myself thinking THIS IS NOT HOW IT WAS DONE IN THE SHORT but I got over it, seeing as I couldn't expect different actors to play the roles exactly the same as Adam and Michael. The one complaint I have about the movie was that the pacing was a little choppy. Zach Gilford's performance was the highlight for me. Have never watched Friday Night Lights but I may have to start now.

(few years later....)

I'd say the film and the short film aren't really connected. The short film is reenacted in the film (with several differences), but where the short film seems plausible, every little detail in it is exploded/exaggerated into the film which creates a fairly unrealistic set of characters/motivations/events. It's not a terrible film but going into it from the short film leaves you thinking "what happened?"
