Great movie to judge future friends with

Note: As for grammar mistakes in my post, im not a native english speaker.

Found this movie so funny that ill have to see it with future friends to judge if they actually possess humor. Because this movie hits jackpot and if they dont like it, then that would say alot about them, in a negative way.

I watched this with no expectations at all not knowing what it was. I cant remember how long its been since i genuinely loved a movie from start to end like this one.

Im guessing the people who doesent enjoy this movie is taking life way to seriously. Gave this movie an 8/10, because as a comedy it succeeds in almost all aspects. My only criticism is that in some parts there was much more potential for what they couldve done, and it shouldve been longer - maybe with one additional sidequest. Though the last point is excusable if they are making a sequel.

I'm guessing you're the one who takes life too seriously if you seriously judge whether to be friends with someone based on their like or dislike of a movie.

Well he does have a point. People that most likely hate this movie are the ones who don't like raunchy humor, and I know a few who hate raunchy and take life very seriously. Not that that's a problem. Or maybe people just didn't like the outcome of the movie, who knows. I know I enjoyed it, and watch it every day (or try to).

i absolutely despise people like you. just because you dont find it funny doesnt mean someone who DOES find it funny is borderline retarded.

let me tell you that the first time I've tried watching 'Borat', I felt disgusted by it, now I can say it was because I had different expectations. I gave it another try a few months later, and this time I was able to enjoy it.

reply

The weird thing is I hated Borat, but loved Your Highness. Even tho they both capitalize on rude raunchy humor.

reply

I don't mind raunchy humor. The problem with this movie is that we're supposed to think it's funny simply because it's raunchy and not because any of it is actually funny.

reply

Agree.

reply

I also agree. I find raunchy humor funny as well. Someone earlier mentioned Borat. The part where he describes his wife's "vagine" is still so funny, I laugh every time. However, this movie was stupid without being funny. It had so much potential but it just didn't work for me. Maybe watching it again might help but I don't really have plans to do that.

reply

I had thought this would be a simple comedy and a parody on a fantasy movie...but I was surprised that the Fantasy aspects including the special effects was actually taken seriously...making it a surprisingly good movie in my opinion.

reply

Couldn't of said it any better.

reply

Well, that's not true. I like raunchy humor but I didn't think that this movie was one of the better ones in that genre.

reply

I love raunchy humor, but this movie was pretty bad.

reply

I love raunchy humour, but what I don't like is movies that are trying way too hard to hit the exact same tone with every comic situation that they explore.

So if someone isn't a fan of raunchy humor...they take life too seriously? Last time I checked, humor is subjective. Everyone has their own tastes in comedy (just like they have opinions in everything else). Some people may like raunchy comedy, others might prefer clever satire. There's nothing wrong with people having a different opinion than you.

reply

Actually lol... Its a figure of speech for the sake of argument, and isnt to be taken literally. Since you not ONLY took it literally, but also is using it against me in such a hostile manner as a counterargument - YOU only prove yourself to be in the "crowd" you accuse ME of being in, which is people taking life to seriously ;) ... I find it kinda funny as im a moral nihilist and a fan of Nietzsche. (Edit: Relevance being i cant take life seriously as i dont believe there is any inherit objective meaning of it, THAT you can take literally)

Not sure if its relevant, but me and my friends are also in the habit of renting 80`s horror movies as comedies as we laugh through them, since they are very often so bad they turn good. ( For example "the howling" series). Also - self irony is good, this movie is a parody on itself. There are lots of ways to judge movies, but i loved this movie simply because i didnt judge it at all. It was like watching a beautifull painting by an unknown author. But hey, im rambling again! Loved the movie from start to finnish and im clueless as to why some people call it bad, id say at WORST its only mediocre.

It was made by director David Gordon Green who has made 4 of the (arguably) best and most beatiful American films of the last decade; "George Washington", "All the Real Girls", "Undertow", and "Snow Angels". He is smart AND funny (some of us understand that they are often not mutually exclusive). It was shot by Tim Orr, who is indeed an artist in his own right as well. Your pretentions can be applied to SNL characters, but not to brilliant minds such as these. You'd fare well to stick to John Hughes and Tina Fey.

You are a perfect example of what the OP is talking about. The fact that you come on here not understanding that you're proving him right, solidifies his point even more.

I appreciate that English is not your native language but that was not a figure of speech. "I pissed myself laughing" would be a figure of speech, "

"Found this movie so funny that ill have to see it with future friends to judge if they actually possess humor. Because this movie hits jackpot and if they dont like it, then that would say alot about them, in a negative way." is on the other hand, a bald statement that can only really be taken the one way. Again, I appreciate that you're not a native English speaker.

I really don't understand people who use the argument "if you didn't like this comedy it's because you take life too seriously". I didn't like this comedy (or didn't like the trailer which amounts to the same thing) because I didn't like it. The fact that someone shouts 'poo!' or 'balls!' doesn't automatically make it funny, not matter have trivially you take life.

That rather Depends...

This, honestly, is one of the primary reasons I hate IMDb's message boards. Appreciation of a book, film, piece of art etc. does not tell you whether a person is humourless / borderline retarded / worth having as a friend. Too many people on these boards seem to take someone else's enjoyment or otherwise of a film as a personal affront.

I liked this film. Not in the same way as I enjoyed listening to Rachmaninov's 2nd, or reading Anna Karenina, or wandering around Angkor Wat (some of the more worthwhile things I did the same day). Nope, I watched it with a girl and some Cambodian herb, and I enjoyed it. There's room in life for the simpler pleasures.

§ Don't vote! It only encourages them.

reply

Saying your a nihilist proves you aren't.
You can't pursuit nihilism since pursuit itself is meaningless/pointless.

reply

The Howling is a self parody dude. It's comedy horror. You were laughing at it because, you were supposed to.

reply

I went to see this movie because I like James Franco and Natalie Portman.

To me, it was REALLY funny and enjoyable! Better than I expected after seeing the trailer.

I wasn't familiar with any of the other actors, but now I have a crush on Justin Theroux and Danny McBride (never heard of him til this movie) and Rasmus Hardiker ("Courtney")! :)

... it's a beetroot!

I was disappointed in the movie because I expected something raunchier, grosser, weirder, more unreasonable and more extravagant or excessive. It was entertaining but I wouldn't call this film the perfect example to judge people's sense of humor. I thought it would have gone much further in the crazyness and the foolishness and the friends I saw it with were also not so enthusiastic about it... Maybe that shows they're worth being my friends after all...

Good point. I would like to make a case for the purpose of saving yourself a lot of heartbreak with regard to relationships. Recently broke up with a girl who I was living with for about a year. There was an early sign that haunted me and made me seriously question whether it would work. I was watching "Anchorman" one night and my ex came in and demanded we watch something else as she "hated stupid movies like this". Given my love for the kind of stupid silliness that Mr. Ferrell indulges in I sat on the lounge in a cold sweat for about 10 minutes wondering what the hell I was doing with this person. In the end we parted ways for many reasons that had nothing to do with that night and I am not shallow enough to base a relationship on pop culture preferences. Point i'm making, like the OP, is that a difference in tastes such as this can tell you a thing or two about who you hang out with.

reply

Ehh, yes and no. Comedy is REALLY hard to find those with a similar taste as you because the subjectivity is off the charts. Even if I have friends who like the same types of comedies as me, there is no guarantee at all that we will like any particular comedy in our preferred genre. Put myself and two of my closest friends with similar tastes in a room and there is a higher likelihood of only one of us laughing compared to all three of us.

Now if someone absolutely can not stand the type of comedies I like, then I would make a note of that only in relation to how many other differences we have to see if it will be a problem. It is great to have a girl who can laugh with you at the same movies though.

I read a hilarious thread on the Dane Cook forum where a guy seriously considered breaking up with his girlfriend because she was laughing hysterically at a guy he just did not find funny and ended up questioning her intelligence. Now he elaborated a bit and mentioned that she only got into him because her friends got her into him, so that suggests she doesn't think for herself, but the main issue was that he hated Dane Cook so much that he had difficulty seeing himself dating someone who laughed so hard at his movies. I can't stand Dane Cook myself, but I wouldn't judge a girl just because she finds him funny, my problem would be if she is like most of his fans and only laughs at his jokes because he is good looking.

reply

We would not be friends.

I didn't like it because it takes more than people swearing and talking bluntly about sex to make me laugh.

This movie was an awful comedy, you are better off judging by Transilvania 6-5000 or Gamers: Dorkness Rising if you want fantasy setting.
