Why some people HATE this movie.

I was initially baffled by the amount of hate this movie seems to have inspired in IMDB message-board monkeys, but I think this entry from the online medical dictionary may offer some insight.

homosexual panic (ho"mo-sek´shoo-al pan´ik) an acute, extreme anxiety reaction brought on by circumstances that induce the unconscious fear of being homosexual or of succumbing to homosexual impulses, or the fear or delusional conviction that the person is thought by others to be a homosexual, often accompanied by agitation, guilt, hallucinations, or depression.

My theory is that certain viewers of this film who are acutely apprehensive about their own masculinity feel compelled to disparage the movie as a way of affirming their own non-homosexuality. Jokes such as the one about giving a wizard a hand-job make them distinctly uncomfortable and induce a "homosexual panic", fueling their compulsion to log onto IMDB and write tedious posts about how much they didn't like this movie, and therefore implying by extension how much they don't like performing sex-acts on dirty old wizards.

Then again, maybe they're just a bunch of humourless prudes. Who knows?

I'm convinced that the people who hate this movie won't touch this thread with a ten-foot phallic symbol, because the truth of my original post is so obvious.

Personally, I don’t hate this movie.
Well of course you don't, you're not in the grips of a homosexual panic. Am I right or am I right?

Seriously though, I can't argue with your well-written post, because as you so correctly say humour is a personal thing. (Although how anyone could not laugh at the deadpan delivery of a line like "To the fückening!" is beyond me!)

I think you may have missed the point I was trying to make when I started this thread. I don't care if someone watches this movie and doesn't think it's as funny as I think it is. I just take issue with the very real hatred this movie inspires, and not just on this message board. Time Magazine put it at #4 on their list of the 10 worst movies of the year, and Salon has an article titled "Is 'Your Highness' the worst film ever made?" Are you kidding me? For crying out loud, what kind of humourless times are we living in?

It makes me wonder what kind of reaction Monty Python and the Holy Grail would get if it was made today. I'm sure the message boards would have endless threads with titles like COCONUTS, SRSLY? IS THSI SPOSED TO BE FUNNY?

It could be really uncomfortable if you saw it with someone you're not very familiar with, and some people might feel that giving a wizard a blowjob for an answer isn't funny.

Blaming it all on homosexual panic is ridiculous.

Umm... Are we still talking about the movie "Your Highness"? Or did this somehow turn into a discussion of your personal life?

Really? I loved the anachronisms, especially the language. There was a lot of swearing, yes, but I thought they spaced it out well enough between appropriately archaic language to let the audience almost forget about it and then BAM! "Handle your sh*t, brother. Please."

LOL. Thanks for the laughs guys. According to the trolls who liked the movie, the people who hated the movie are really anti-homosexuals with a deep hatred for homosexuals. That's some classic stuff right there.

My biggest gripe with this movie was that it wasn't that funny, there were moments where I chuckled but it just felt like the filmmakers weren't that aware of the material they were spoofing. This could've been a stellar parody of sword and sorcery fiction, but its potential just wasn't reached too well IMHO.

I have an unusual set of skills...

Are you kidding me? I'm a fan of the fantasy genre, and I don't get that at all. In fact, when I was watching this movie what I thought was amazing is that if they edited out the Minotaur's penis and dubbed in new dialogue, they could sell this movie as a serious sword & sorcery flick and it would still be better than most of the fantasy stuff that has come out recently. For instance, compare the Minotaur in "Your Highness" to the Minotaur in "Immortals". Both movies came out in 2011. Immortals was a fantasy movie with a huge budget, but their minotaur was just a big guy with cowhorns on his helmet. Immortals didn't even have their minotaur in a proper labyrinth, and it was supposed to be the story of Theseus, for crying out loud! And the scene in Your Highness where they fight the hydra is better than anything in most "serious" sword and sorcery movies I've seen in a long time, including Immortals. Like those craptacular Narnia movies, for instance. Or how about Eragon?

I think part of the reason I found this movie so funny is that I've sat through so many crappy fantasy movies lately, and it was great to see them finally get the roasting they deserve. They even parodied Ray Harryhausen's mechanical bird Bubo, from the original Clash of the Titans. (A movie I loved, by the way.) You have to be old-school geeky to catch a reference like that.

Another funny thing about people who hate this movie is when they try to imply that they are somehow too intelligent or sophisticated to find it funny. They write nonsense like "Every sentence used the F-word" or "Some of us need more than penis jokes to find a movie entertaining." First of all, it makes me wonder if these idiots have actually seen the movie or if they just read some bad reviews and are trying to jump on the bandwagon. Secondly, they sound like a bunch of prissy old grannies writing film reviews for a church newsletter.

Humourless prudes indeed!

Great post and great defense.

I'm watching the scene in the labyrinth where the Minotaur is about to rape the squire and Natalie Portman plays the flute... this is classic! Then whatshisface tries to saw the horn as a trophy. This stuff is gold. The set design alone sets it apart from the Wayans type parodies and into something really unique and special. This film will be so well regarded as cult classic but ten years from now. Can't wait for all the negatives to have to review again ywars from now and accept the genius of the comedy. I mean, 'Belladonna' as the Princess in the Tower? For most guys, 'Belladonna' is the name of a really dirty Pornstar and never the name of a deadly nightshade plant. This is adult, male, entertainment, and I bet all the female actresses would have loved acting in this because it is executed well and they would have had a lot of fun on set. The naysayers who think acting is about regurgitating Shakespeare and can never see that it is ripe for taking the piss out of are sorely out of touch. I gave this movie 8/10.
