What's up with the Mehta hate?

I don't get you guys. Is it because he's Indian and cooks as such, there seems to be some hostility and displeasure towards anything Indian on Food Network and it's viewers I've noticed. Or is his personal style too refined and unmanly for American viewers, he's not brutish and gruff enough?

I didn't know that Food Network was just for Italian and random comfort cuisines. Don't be afraid of a little spice folks.

Indian cuisine is one of my favorites, but I still can't stand Mehta. He's an obnoxious weasel. Enough with the freaking ice cream.

He lucked out when they picked Indian food for the double-elimination round. Anything else and he would have been gone.

I don't understand why he's a poor sportsman as some people say. Is it because he grabs ingredients before other people can? So what? EVERYONE else in this competition has done the same thing as some point. Every single competitor has a strategy and it's usually to fxck someone over. He doesn't talk crap behind anyone's back like a lot of the other chefs do. He's a great chef. I don't get it.

He was a jerk and it was not that he grabbed ingredients before others, he would take it all- like the sugar in the final four, it was on his table and he told Mullen with a smirk he did not have it. He did the same thing with the spice mixer and the ice cream maker, he said he was still using them, while he smirked and clearly was not. He played dirty- that is what makes me glad he did not win.

I guess they just trusted them with a credit card? I don't remember them saying the typical "you have ____ in $ and ____ amount of time to shop.." That's the only explanation I can think of because he had at least four times the amount of food that everyone else had.

That's it! The smirking.

I've been thinking about why I disliked Mehta since I saw this thread days ago. It has nothing to do with his ethnicity or food. Just saying it was his personality wasn't it exactly either. Because he could be entertaining.

It's the smirking. The nastiness hidden behind a guise of gentility. All of which is shown by his constant smirking. That's what bothered me most about him.

Oh yeah, there's also the ice cream. He was like a one trick pony with that.

think some folks remember his old place, pankot palace, in 'the temple of doom' had some sketchy owners.

I have no problem with his personality, actually, I'm rooting for him to win. People have been playing dirty and rough the whole time, he's the only one who's getting any flack for it.

i've been in and out but appleman has always struck me as the jerk in the group. i like mehta so i'm pretty surprised by all the hate

TheOddDuck nailed it. It wasn't his food or his ethnicity, it was his character - weasel, and poor sportsmanship.

I really enjoy Jeffrey Steingarten as a frequent IC judge, but I was literally flabbergasted he liked Mehta.

Mehta ignored Jeffrey's comments from prior rounds, and Jeffrey did not crucify him for it. Also, Jeffrey seemed unconcerned Mehta lacked much skill in basic cooking techniques, and Mehta grossly over embellishing, garnishing, and decorating should have had Jeffery spitting venom!!

I still like Steingarten, but this anomalous behavior in regards to Mehta might indicate a brain tumor or some other dire medical condition.
