Tom hardy as heathcliff.........

I personally found the acting of Mr Tom Hardy as the character Heathcliff very profound and I could feel the character of Heathcliff coming through with such deep emotion at having to play such a deep and dark (not to mention) a cold side that the character Heathcliff has which I am sure that would have been very difficult for Mr Hardy as he appears such a 'warm' person! which in my opinion shows that Tom Hardy has great depth to his acting ability.... and all the emotions he released as the character Heathcliff including his tears brought tears to my eyes... wonderful actor!! also the actress Charlotte Riley was just as excellent as Cathy! which I am sure Emily Bronte would have agreed (if she was alive today) to see her Cathy and Heathcliff come to life :)

reply

Couldn't agree more, both were refreshingly different to other interpretations yet managed to invoke the true spirit of their respective characters.

Particularly Tom Hardy, who I feel is on the verge of becoming the next big thing, and deservedly so.

reply

Electracinta i disagree, You obviously are uneducated to the other actors who have portrayed heathcliff who are so much more believable i dont ever write messages but you sounded so stupid and have such bad taste i felt sorry for you. Have u actually ever watched any of the other movies of wuthering heights? This guy made me wanna laugh i didnt even watch part 2. My advice to you is to go out and watch the 1992 version!

reply

I have seen every version of wuthering heights thank you and that includes an italian version and a french version. Now this movie has not premiered here yet so i had to buy my copy from amazon. And i had never seen or heard of tom hardy before but he does stand out from all the rest to me! So much in fact that i want to see other works of his, im looking up on amazon. He was profound to me and has a magnetic capturing ability on screen i would love to see more of him!Im allowed my opinion and i dont need your critical judgements u have worked me up so much i think my spelling has gone crazy! Your mean careless :(

reply

Elizabeth the Virgin Queen

reply

Hey rachel, I went on you tube to find sum more info about him and also looked him up on Amazon i have ordered minotaur. I have seen dot the I a while ago i remember liking the film thinking the ending to me was a real twist, but cant remember him in it. i know he has done the life of charles bronson which i plan to see (even though I at first thought it was the actor) how slow am i lol. I thought their chemistry was so there also in wh. I wish his movies were more readily available because thanks to wh i have now discovered another actor i like so much i wanna see more works.

reply

I saw him in layer cake on youtube today. He doesn't have a big part in it but he has the best line "Long live the king"! I love this man's voice. Yes Bronson sounds good before I knew better I thought it was about the actor too. I have only been a fan for about two months but am hooked now. I have the WH DVD and I will be seeing more movies as soon as I can get my hands on them. You're right Dot the I had a real funny ending. I saw it over the weekend on netflix instant viewing. I would suggest that if you want to get to see more of his movies get netflix. I will be seeing Sweeney Todd soon on netflix. He plays a Detective. It is from the BBC. He is on myspace if you want to find out more.

reply

Careless80 why are you even looking up this version of WH if you detest it so much? Just stick with the 92 version if that's your taste...who cares? Surely you have better things to do with your time than be rude to people and make yourself look like an ass.

You're loose! No! You're even looser! You're the loosest of them all!

Seriously, if you're going to call people stupid and be anti-social then learn how to spell and correct use of grammar. Otherwise one may not understand you're correct meaning.

By the way, Tom Hardy was a brilliant Heathcliff in my opinion.

Sorry to butt in, but the most impressive Tom Hardy role I've seen so far is "Bronson": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172570/

It's not for everyone though. Disturbing, and quite unwell.

reply

Wow, that was incredibly rude.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and as a matter of fact, I think the 1992 version is lacklustre and un-sexy.

Tom Hardy did make me laugh- in that he brought a humour to the role that I haven't seen yet; which was welcome as often Heathcliff is so one dimensional in his portrayals, all melodrama, no realism.

I think it's basically lazy to just insult Electracinta merely because you don't agree with them, not to mention really unkind and unnecessary.

reply

I don't mean to be rude careless80, or fangirly, but have you read Wuthering Heights? Because I have, several times. I have also seen numerous film adaptations, including the 1992 version - which other than the pleasure of looking at Ralph Fiennes for 2 hours - left me cold.
In my opinion Tom Hardy's portrayal of Heathcliff was truer to the book than any other I have seen. Heathcliff is a very demanding character - very complex. An actor really has to play multiple roles to convey his many facets - which Hardy does very effectively, right down to his voice, mannerisms and body language. Not only that, but the actor has to make us empathize with Heathcliff, even though he is a monster - which Hardy did - for me anyway ( I could never feel it for Fiennes or Olivier or any of the others). You can see Hardy's Heathcliff suffering and understand his progression to madness - while Fiennes just seems like an obsessive dick and Olivier patheticly immasculated.

reply

Here, here! I agree wholeheartedly with dirtyboots.

reply

I agree also-read the book recently heathcliff is very complex. Can be loving, cruel, evil etc..Takes a good actor to bring out all the traits good and bad. Tom Hardy did this character justice. He brought humanity to heathcliff.

reply

No way he was ugly pale and his hair didnt look natural. He was ugly. he no way acted complex he had no emotion on his face at all he was emotionless. from what i saw of part 1 they didnt even stick to the book they turned it into a sappy romance. What is it with u chicks. Need sum taste!

reply

Careless80, it is certainly your right to dislike this production of Wuthering Heights. But it seems your primary goal is to post infantile personal attacks against people with differing "taste"/ opinions from that of your own. Perhaps if you had watched the entire production you would feel differently. As a matter of fact, this production "stuck to the book" as well or better than most other versions out there including your much touted 1992 version, and in many ways was more daring in its' approach - presenting scenes which I have never seen in film before and exploring aspects of the novel which no previous production has ever attempted.
The nice thing about online forums is that everyone is equal and anonymous. But careless80, you have exposed yourself. Your comments are boorish, mean-spirited and childish.

reply

I have seen the 1992 version. There were some things I liked about it but I do prefer this version. I have also seen the 1970 one with Timothy Dalton who I like and 1939 versions with Olivier but can honestly say this take on the story does follow the book in many ways and is changed in other ways which only added to its appeal for me.

I keep hoping that the music will end up on I-tunes. Really love it.

That was eloquently put, and I'm with you. I think Hardy played the best Heathcliff I've yet seen.

Hi LHC-I read the book recently. I agree that he captured Heathcliff as written by Miss Bronte. I too love the scene you speak of. Real chemistry between those two just like the book. I do not worry about the skin color that does not matter to me. I did read that there is a bollywood version for those that might like that take on it has anybody seen that version? I'd be interested to hear your opinions. Anyway though I've got a new heathcliff to watch now. I know I won't find another one as good as Tom Hardy not now and I don't want to actually!

reply

[deleted]

I'm not going to debate heathcliff to each his/her own..My mom likes Timothy Dalton better oh well. I like him as Bond 007 but not heathcliff or Rhett Butler! Only Gable is Rhett ! But that's a debate for the GWTW board.

reply

Oh yes, this is one of my favorite scenes as well. One of the many things I like about this production is they way Heathcliff's capacity for brutal violence is shown. When Edgar punches Heathcliff (a very convincing dodge by the way) and then Heathcliff forces Edgar to the floor with the poker in hand, I actually thought for a second he might kill him.
The Hindley scene is also terrifying, and fairly true to the book. Hardy must really have a lot of inner rage to channel because I was totally convinced. The physicality of WH'09 just really did it for me (am I mental?).
Oh and while we're on the subject of darkness and obsession, lets not forget they ACTUALLY SHOW H-cliff dig up Cathy's grave. This blew me away! He claims to have done it several times in the book, but I can't ever remember seeing this in film before.
As I've mentioned, this is one of my favorite novels and I've seen a lot of different film versions. This one really showed me some things I hadn't seen before.

They should have been married but Bronte didn't write it that way.. I think she should have but still she wrote a really great story.

I LOVED the time in the drawing room where Cathy is insane with jealously and manhandles Heathcliff and he happily and satisfyingly wrestles her into the next room, smiling all the way while pushing her roughly along..the tactile emotional display was real and immediate and spot on!! IT was mad insane obsession between those two..and Tom Hardy GOT IT and gave it to his audience beautifully.

It may be my favorite scene. I actually had to watch it several times because it just got me. Just TOO good!!

You are so mean! It's one thing to state your opinion--it's quite another to insult someone so rudely.

I have seen all the adaptations of wuthering heights and have read the book; this version is my favorite. It is by far the most emotionally effective. Yes it strays a bit from the novel (especially in regards to character)... Yes, Linton is considerably sweeter and less bratty, Cathy is more innocent, etc and so on.... Regardless, it managed to accomplish something which, I feel, almost all other versions lack: the romantic, emotional core.

Tom Hardy made you want to laugh? Sorry, but that statement makes you "sound stupid." Even people who aren't drawn to this adaptation tend to praise Hardy's performance. But, yes--I admit, for the most part, the 1992 version portrayed Heathcliff and Cathy accurate to the novel. Although, Heathcliff's character was missing that innate goodness, which marks him as the Byronic Hero that he is famous for being.

reply

How dare you insult someones intelligence, just because their opinion/taste is different than yours. It is actually YOU who sound so incredibly stupid. Her taste is "bad?" Because it differs from your own "impeccable taste?" What a joke. And comparing that "dry hump" of an actor, Ralph Fiennes to someone as talented and vital as Tom Hardy, just shows that your taste is most likely "dry and boring." I just bet you loved "The Kings Speech," yawn... My advice to you is to go out and get yourself laid...it sounds like you need it.

Martina Cole said in a recent interview "I like that Tom Hardy". She went on to say that he was the perfect person to play her character Freddie in "The Take". I think that's really great. If Bronte had been alive in our time perhaps she'd have praise for him too.

i never imagine Heathcliff to be a pasty pale Englishman in a dark wig but TOm Hardy makes you forget all that as he transforms himself into the tortured Heathcliff. not to mention THAT VOICE that can turn torturous or tender or menacing in an instant. i love this version, i wish they weren't making that new film version with Chuck Bass because this version deserves more appreciation than it's getting.

reply

I read that this version with Tom Hardy is going to be previewed in London in a few weeks..I predict it will win some awards at very least an award for Hardy..

I couldn't agree more. Hardy made a wretched man relatively likable...well...actually...LOVABLE I found myself repulsed by him (like I expected to be, as usual) yet falling in love with him, too (so NOT expected, & had NOT happened before now!!)
I imagine this to be Cathy's experience as well, which is why this version really brought the story to life for me.
Extremely well done. Love, love LOVE him.....er....it!

i totally agree.. i absolutely loved Tom Hardy as Heathcliff. his raw emotions and very vivid facial features made him so believable as Heathcliff. this has very easily become my fav rendition of wuthering heights. I cannot imagine an actor doing a better job at the most complex Heathcliff. Heathcliff is my all time fav character.. watching Tom Hardy bring him to life was such a delight.

I feel appreciative of watching n owning this film.

I read the novel and I have seen the 1992 version with Ralph Fiennes and luckily I found this one(2009) on YouTube so I watched it in 18 parts.

Honestly
I liked much more Ralph Fiennes in this character because he portrayed very well both sides of the character, the sweet and tender guy when he was in love with Cathy and he was just incredible in second part when he becomes an evil man where you can't believe how far he went with his revenge.

If you think Hardy was better portraying the nice side of Heathcliff it's because his script was more focused on that side, people think Ralph wasn't that good playing the good side or being sympathetic it's because his script was way more focused on the second part.

Ralph with Hardy's script would have even better than he already was and I admit that even tough in the novel their love never gets consummated this version( the 2009) that advantage of that scene.

I felt so jealous that my Ralph Fiennes didn't have that scene in the 1992 version.

reply

Have you seen any other versions? The 1992 version seems closer to what was described in the book..
