Was Cathy cross-eyed?

Was it me, or did it look like Cathy (Charlotte Riley) was cross-eyed in most of her scenes? She is absolutely beautiful, but I couldn't get passed that!

reply

I've heard a few other people mention this and to be honest never noticed her looking cross eyed.

reply

I'd be cross eyed too if I had those scenes with Tom Hardy. I saw it, but it was the camera angles, plus she hasn't quite mastered control of her eyes at close range yet. obviously she is not really cross eyed, or she'd look like that from any angle. On that note [I wanted to post a separate thread about this, but thought it might be too silly] Did anyone notice that in some very moving scenes, notably any involving Charlotte/Cathy,that Toms face turns bright red, or he blushes? It is definitely NOT makeup, because you can see it happening. Charming. As if I needed another reason to love the guy.

reply

My guess would be strabismus, or lazy eye. It's only noticable sometimes, which is how strabismus goes. I thought it made her seem a little more real, since she's so beautiful.

reply

solielvert, I would love to know which scenes you're talking about where Tom blushes-I didn't notice it before and I want to see it now :)

reply

In the reunion scene where she is kissing him all over the face, and where she is dying and he is laying over her. He just sort of turns red starting with his ears. In the last 7 seconds of the love scene on the rocks[That might just be the shadow of Charlotte's hair falling over him]At some point when he is confronting her over her decision to marry Edgar, and in the barn; you can't see his face because of all that hair, but again, kissing her, his ears turn red. It does seem pretty random. In high definition it's fairly obvious, but when I watch the same scenes on my computer I can't really see it as much. I think he is just an incredibly emotional actor, who probably identifies and connects very intimately with his character. If you are into over analyzing things for fun,[as I am obviously] you'll find dozens of charming little idiosyncrasies and sleights in his performance, which altogether made him so believable, and fun to watch.

reply

I need to watch again to see what you're talking about it. Love his performance.

reply

I went back and watched these scenes and you are right, he does blush! I don't think it was his acting ability so much as his natural reaction to Charlotte. Their chemistry was wow.

reply

Yeah, I noticed his face get a bit red in some of the scenes too. Another thing I saw was in the scene where Heathcliff and Isabella are talking to Cathy about how Isabella loves Heathcliff and wants to make him happy. After Cathy drags Heathcliff inside to the other room and starts yelling at him she pushed him back against a table or something. Tom laughs for a few seconds right when she pushes him (almost like he's taken off guard by her fiestiness but is enjoying it) then his face becomes serious again. You might not notice if you're not paying attention too closely but I thought it was funny. Anyone else see it?

reply

Definitely saw that. He does laugh when she says 'you clearly prefer the bliss of inflicting misery.' But in the hallway before, he does it too to a lesser degree when she yells "answer me!" He sort of laughs [he does that funny sniff thing first]..I don't know what you would call it,like a gasp or something or a snigger? It may have been ad lib, because this tiny girl is yelling at him so furiously, maybe he was trying not to bust up laughing and it turned into something else. I don't know, but it was great whatever it was. I love that crazy incredulous look on his face when Edgar is telling him he is a moral poison.

reply

That whole scene is brilliant. How she drags him into the room and he grabs her up in his arms. I think he was laughing because he was amused at how jealous and crazed he was making her, which of course was his plan. I think what is a great touch is how she's yelling at him in the hallway and then tows him into the room-- you see him closing the door behind them so as to be alone with her, even though he knew Edgar was coming up the drive.

Too bad Edgar interupted..

My husband sat down and watched the movie with me, but wouldn't shut up about her eyes. I didn't notice it until he pointed it out, but everytime they showed her, he was like "OMG her eye is so annoying!!!" I had to watch it again without him to get to enjoy it hehehe, but he's happy now he's not the only one who noticed it.

LOL. IN the book there is no refernce to cross eyes. Have just read it so feel certain of this. But evidently in the TV version she has! It's quite obvious. Still, it should only detract if you're looking for it...

i didn't particularly like her, but i can't compare to any other cathys since i never saw any other versions, or even read the book. somehow, i pictured cathy would be a bit edgier and have some fire that would attract heathcliff in the first place. but then maybe he just liked her cause she was the only female his age around there. i dunno. other men have turned to beastiality, so it seems a better path to do the boring chick in the house...

i mentioned that i thought she was only ok, but not great, to an actor i know and he defended her saying that she was just out of school and it was her first role.

who did she blow to get such a big break?

Now we know who.LOL....When I saw a photo of them in dublin "Bronson" I could tell they were dating, that was before Tom and the ex split up.

I think she does have a squint in real life -I saw her in a drama about the Spanish flu and she was a little cross eyed in that too. I am really surprised she did not have it corrected as a child -or perhaps later when she knew she wanted to be an actress.
I found it very distracting. I always do if I notice someone is a little cross eyed, and I thought hers was much worse than you normally see in actors.

I prefer Imaginality to reality.

reply

Really?? Frequently, even after having surgery to correct this, the eyes do not align perfectly. I think it makes her more real, unlike many other actresses, who are made to look completely perfect, with plastic surgery.

reply

This actress can still have her strabismus corrected. It's generally an outpatient surgery that tightens the eye muscles, until the eye matches the other with regard to alignment. When not corrected, it can have negative long-term affects on vision as well.

Demi Moore had really bad strabismus, but had the surgery before entering the acting industry. Her eyes have been perfectly aligned since. Also, Paris Hilton has a noticeably lazy eye that has become even more pronounced with age, but she still hasn't done the surgery.

I, like the OP and others on this thread, become very annoyed when actors eyes are lazy or out of alignment - unless it is meant for their character, like actor Marty Feldman's roles of the past. His horrible alignment (and bulging eyes) actually made him famous.

In everyday life, if someone has strabismus or lazy eye, I'm not annoyed to interact with them at all, but it's the literal focus on a character of a film that seems to pronounce the issue and takes me out of the movie a bit. Apparently, I'm not alone.

I think Charlotte Riley does have a lazy eye. I've noticed it in premier pictures.

she's not cross eyed, she's sloe-eyed. her eyes slant downward, sort of like a fairy. maybe not a good definition, but she's sloe-eyed. it can be a little distracting.

reply

Just finished watching this on Netflix, and the scene where Heathclift and she are on her death bed it was very apparent that her eyes were somewhat crossed.

I think she must have a lazy eye. It doesn't matter though, she's absolutely gorgeous!
