Love scenes ?

I still can't get over how physical this version got. Anyway, I was wondering why in the sex scene with Edgar and Cathy they practically gave us full frontal nudity [an image I heartily , mentally avoid when it comes to those two] But Heathcliff never even took his shirt off either time? I figured at first it is because he has major tattoos which makeup couldn't hide, but now I think it might have been more of a script related thing- one of those metaphoric things they kept throwing in there. I won't say what I think the metaphor was, but I'm curious to know what other people think.

There might be some symbolism but probably 1) because Hardy has large tats on his arms 2) because it is on PBS (or ITV) and they can't exactly show all that much skin. I could definitely have done without that horrid Edgar-Cathy scene!

IMO, I think Tom Hardy is gorgeous with a fantastic body and I think the scene was very tastefully done.

I agree. He must be a phenomenal human being as well, an old soul, for it would take nothing less to bring the character of Heathcliff to life the way he did. I think those two scenes for whatever reason, hearkened back to the days when it was still cool to leave something to the imagination, and yet they still had a rawness to them, and in the case of the second with Isabella, a wallop to the psyche. I thought THAT scene was incredible, and one of the most powerful in the movie. That is most logically what would have happened. I do not believe Heathcliff would have been a sexually violent man. He was way too subtle for that, and besides, that's a different sort of monster altogether. It grosses me out when they do that with his character, like in the 1998 version when he rapes Isabella. How ridiculous! For one thing, she was infatuated with him, that was the whole idea, she was doing anything for him willingly. I suppose you can think what you want about the motives in showing their awful honeymoon; I've read some comments saying they think he tells her not to look at him because he wants to pretend its Cathy..NAH, he's beyond such poor compensation at that point. What I imagine the scene illustrates, or suggests, is that he feels horribly guilty, even after everything Cathy has done to him,he has always been doggedly faithful to her, and being still madly in love with her, the sorrow and the guilt he feels is so overwhelming he wants to put himself out of it. Marrying Isabella was sort of a wicked lark to get even with Cathy. I don't think his plan of revenge was even coherent at that point, but marrying her undermines what's left of his soul, to a point where the possibility of further evil is not only acceptable, but necessary.

He specifically said the next morning that he'd tried to love her over the last four months but that he couldn't and that when he looked into her eyes he saw her brother.

I think he just wasn't that into her.

That works.

To the OP I could see some symbolism in doing it that way and also being that Tom Hardy has extensive tattooing, which would have been a big pain the ass to attempt to cover up. Love the tattoos don't get me wrong, but they're a huge pain to cover up with make up. So maybe it's a little bit of both and definitely leaves an interesting dynamic to deal with.

"Spastics can have fun too."

A Heathcliff with tattoos might have been rather hot. Totally inappropriate, but hot somehow. I guess they didn't have a lot of tattoo artists wandering the English moors in the 1700s' though. I could see Heathcliff indulging in body art nonetheless. I saw a video, or some pictures of Tom Hardy somewhere, and he was showing how they do cover up[his] tattoos with special makeup if they really have to. [He had to have them covered for some other off shirt role.]So I tend to believe now it was not aesthetics, but mood purpose and script that kept him fully clothed. The Cathy/Edgar scene seemed sort of dirty and uncomfortable, but the Cathy Heathcliff one was very sweet, and almost sad..maybe not so much if they were nude? Honestly, I thought they were just rolling around making out until Heathcliff actually said "We laid together."

reply

loved Heathcliff. Tom is so awesome don't care if they showed the tattoos but they could'nt. That scene is one of the best anyway.

Large tats for sure, I can imagine how much easier for the makeup team and Tom to keep his shirt on. I was looking for sites and found one..I had to do a double take and look closely at him because of the pics on the front page! I didn't recognize him at first. He's cuter and cuter everytime I look at him. I thought there must be a UFC fighter of the same name! LOL I found a fan site for Tom that has some pics.

Seeing him as Heathcliff really made me sit up and take notice. I thought he was excellent in the role! I started looking through other movies and saw that I had seen him in a few other things and wanted to see what his characters were so started searching for sites. :) I have a couple I haven't seen written down on my "to watch" list.

reply

I watched him as Heathcliff and then when I did a internet search for a pic of him I thought I had found a pic of the wrong person thought there was another Tom Hardy. Then I realized it was the same person what a surprise I never had recalled seeing him before. I guess I must have missed whatever other movies he had been in. I found a list of his movies and I've seen quite a few.

reply

yes that site is a good one. Tons of pics.

I was surprised Heathcliff would have the energy for sex after being flogged. That had to be so painful. I did feel bad for Isabella.

reply

I assume Tom Hardy's tattoos couldn't be covered up solidly with makeup and so that required him to wear a shirt. I did appreciate the juxaposition between his sex scene with Cathy on the Moors which was highly poetic and romantic and the scenes with Edgar/Cathy and Heathcliff/Isabella which were almost clinical.

Sex scene with Heathcliff/Isabella was strangely fascinating. I'd never read the book, so when he tells her to look away from him, I thought it was because he was trying to fantasize it was Cathy he was making love to (though I wouldn't call that making loveā€”that was cold sex!).

Later H tells Isabella that her eyes are the exact same as those of the people he hates most. I felt so bad for her. Wished I could've stormed into the room and rescued her myself. :(

It was a nice love scene the one we see between Tom Hardy and Charlotte but I was jealous that Ralph's version didn't have this scene.

Ralph is so sexy and handsome and looked like he was in perfect shape in WH that me think what a waste was not giving him a love scene with Juliette Binoche and I'm sure fans of the other Heathcliff's share my thoughts.

I always wish they had not shown the sex scene between Edgar and Cathy. I know the meaning behind showing it but it was disgusting in a way and decreased the elegance of the movie IMO.
