reason for 'the chase' SPOILERS

part of the palm springs film festival AUG 2008. film well done; lots of energy & emotion; there are some focus, sound issues, but that could have been the fault of the theater projectionist. wondering WHY he is so desperate to become positive - is he trying to die so he will no longer have to care for the family member at home? is his life so bad that he wants to play russian roulette with death? i heard the director's discussion on the statistics on intentional un-safe sex, and some background on why it occurs might be helpful. does the character want to join a lost lover? was that his lover? did i miss something, or was it just not discussed?
