I didn't get this one thing

The mother constantly getting on her son for not getting back at the killer of her other son.The kid who killed her son had a gun.Her other son had a soccer ball. How could he have possibly gone after the killer?I know the mother was grieving, but the whole thing happened fast for the other kid.How could the other kid could have possibly have done away with the killer? Was he supposed to throw the ball at his head or something?I found the parts where the mother was getting on the kid for not striking back totally implausible.

I think that it was just her desperate reaction. She coulnd`t stand the whole situation. She needed someone to blame it for to cope with her grief. Maybe she thought the boy could have screamed to warn his brother or the whole family.

I think that green-elf is probably right. But another thing that I thought was that maybe she thought that Joe did not call the police quickly enough. He seemed to kind of take his time walking in, and looking at his brother before calling the authorities, which is of course what many children in such a frightening situation might do.

I think that she was just a bitter, angry person in general though. She should have just been glad that Joe was not killed too, not consider him the killer of her son.

Yup. Desperation of a mother in an impossible situation. I took her hateful reaction towards her son symbolic of being trapped between two impossible forces - the Protestants and the Catholics. For the mother to lash out at those truley responsible (both sides) she moves outside of the protection of the Catholics. Her surviving son was the easy target for her desperation. A very powerful moment.

More like crappy script and acting. No one speaks like that here, never have and hopefully never will. It was just something to add some angst for the protagonist.

Wow, aren't you a little Misogynist...did your girlfriend just cheat on you or something?

It's not a crappy script - How the hell would you know how someone would act in that situation? Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

well:

I live in that town.

I know the family.

I know bad acting when I see it.

I know bad dialogue when I hear it.

reply

Your opinion.

IMO the acting was great and loved the dialogue.

See thats the thing about opinions. While technically they can't be wrong, they can be poorly created while some are clearly better because they're based on better information.

reply

Opinions are subjective in nature and doesn't necessary become better with more information (information itself being subjective and sometimes misleading as well) even if you think yours is better just because you know the family, town. but a movie closer to what you believe to be true (cause of "your background") doesn't make it good, it makes it a documentary (if we are to believe your information). We judge a film for it's entertainment values (whatever the creative liberty), imo it's an entertaining movie, so in the end background information is irrelevant.

Hmm. Perhaps you're humorously messing with our minds...it's the first I've seen it done in that way. 

You know the family? I thought this was fiction based on a real historical period. Are you saying that this is in someway based on a real situation?

reply

Go back and read the FAQ’s for this movie. It is based on fact as far as the murder and its being witnessed by the victim’s brother. The rest is fiction, a sort of “what if” the killer and the brother meet up in later life (which is based in part on the writer’s real life interviews with both men). In real life, they never met after the killing.

Mothers can have favorites and the Irish are big on oldest sons. We're supposed to think she was irrational from grief and took it out on the younger son, sort of like in "Ordinary People."
