'Mystery Team' is one of those comedies...

...that you either "get" or you don't. And I'm not saying that if you "get" it you're somehow enlightened and smart and hip and if you don't you're not. What I mean is that it either really connects with you or it doesn't. There's not much in between reaction. Sort of like with "Napoleon Dynamite".

Actually I've found this is true of a lot of sketch comedy troupes, from "Kids in the Hall" to "The State", neither of which I ever really "got".

Yeah, I can agree with that. Peoples' opinions of these kinds of movies don't tend to change over time, either.

reply

This is a definitely love it or hate it movie.

I definitely enjoyed it quite a lot, but I can certainly see a lot of people dismissing it as silly.

reply

It was pretty good, quite funny. 7/10

Look at the night sky, where does it end?

reply

I guess I'm in the "don't get it" crowd...granted, I "GET" that this is basically like the Brady Bunch Movie where these detective teens with child mentalities thrown into today's world...but if I laughed ONCE while watching this flick, that was too many times...

Gave it a 2/10

I think it's more that they're young but already longing for their glory days. None of them have really "grown up" since their first big case. It's not so much that they're thrown into today's world, it's more that they've stunted their own development by refusing to acknowledge real life.

Donald is the best example of this, as both his friends are going off to college while he assumed they would just stay in town and be detectives forever. He's living in a fantasy world he created when he was a child, basically.

I agree I thought this was hilarious but I could understand why people would dislike it.

Cool.

Completely agree. First saw it about five years ago and absolutely loved it then. I just revisited it last night after not having seen it in a couple years, and it's just as hilarious as ever. But it's definitely a very unique film and I can easily see people not enjoying it. It has a very specific sort of tone that I could see rubbing people the wrong way... sort of deliberate idiocy. Absolutely a "love it or hate it" type movie.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

reply

Completely correct. Like a lot of comedies in that respect. If you're not in on the humor, the movie probably isn't going to work for you.

In a way, the movie kind of reminded me of The Other Guys. In that the characters are ridiculously silly dealing with a deadly serious case.

Just saw it tonight for the first time! I found Mystery Team to be very very funny in an absurdist kind of way. I like a lot of offbeat comedy styles and having watched Community pretty recently as well, I saw a lot of similarities between the characters Donald Glover plays in both shows. Jason was like an even more infantalized/arrested development version of Troy.
But yeah, I can definitely see a lot of people watching the first 10 minutes and being like, "Woah this movie is dumb.", because at first glance it seems like you're watching awkward/bad acting (or over-the-top) but then you realize that that's part of the joke. And that the juvenile dialogue/characters are intentional.
