The accident

I love this movie and have watched it many times, but I never actually figured out what exactly happened with that dog in the beginning of the movie that provoked the accident and all the commotion on the sidewalk. Can someone clear that out for me, please?

The dog belongs to a prostitute who lives in one of the floors of the building located next to that sidewalk. The prostitute was having a client so she put the dog in the balcony and locked him there so that she won't be disturbed during the session. The dog just jumped (suicide?) and fell on the sidewalk causing the commotion which resulted in two people getting injured.

I'd like to add something about the meaning of that scene. As far as i know, science argues that dogs/animals don't commit suicide, not consciously at least. But what the scene is trying to say, imo, is that the small spaces we live in (and the lives we live) are so absurd, even a dog would commit suicide. Also, the obvious fact that bypassers were more interested in the dead dog and the passed out lady instead of the man that got hit by a car (who needed the help the most) - as a picture of today's society.

Hopefully this makes sense. It's 6 am here, so i'm not too sure.
