My thoughts on Chico and Rita

Chico and Rita is a nice little film with some great music, animation
that really brings out all of the vivid colors, and atmosphere that
takes you into it's setting. It all blends it in so seamlessly. It's
main problem? A weak screenplay that is filled with predictable plot
points and turns. It never rises to become anything special, despite
some great stand-alone scenes. Still, recommended for the great blend
of music and what style it has! The voice-over performances are quite
effective, and it isn't hard to see the passion put into it. It's also
quite refreshing to see an animated film in Spanish, and definitely for
one to get an Oscar nomination. But it doesn't hold a candle to
Rango, which will deservedly win the Oscar.

I agree with this 100%. The plotting was a bit boring. I almost took a nap. The real reason to see this is the music and atmosphere it creates. I wish I could time travel back to Havana in 1949. What a wonderful vibe.

Chico and Rita, as characters, just didn't have enough depth. I didn't care enough about them to be invested in their relationship.

In the commentary they showed how they made a mock up of Havana back then and every street, building and bar really existed. They tried to be accurate right down to the advertisements on street cars, etc. They took special pains with the music finding musicians who knew and could play like Charlie Parker, etc.

I completely agree. Chico and Rita's characterisations were at times problematic and the film became increasingly melodramatic, especially the climax, which was cliche. Though I do admire the filmmaker's work in recreating Havana in specific detail based upon photographs of the era.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

Also agreed. Chico just kept on doing too much dumb crap for me to care about him anymore; Rita taking him back time and time again got less and less believable as the movie went on. Especially at the end....come on now, movie.

Definitely a style over substance type of film.
