Did anybody else kinda expect *SPOILLERS*

that younger singer at the end to turn out to be his granddaughter??I could totally see how their one last passionate night together could have led to a pregnancy(which would also make sense in why Rita decided a few weeks later to tell him to come to Vegas in order for them to get married)...Rita kept the secret but obv. held on to the records to remind her of her big love, for the truth to only come out at her deathbed or after her death...

I swear when Chico walks in and you see this younger woman standing there claiming how she's such a huge fan and she has all his albums and he is kinda wondering how a young woman like her got a hold of those old records I was almost kinda expecting it to go that route and then when it didn't and we got the sappy, happy ending instead I felt a bit disappointed...I loved everything about this movie except the ending,I think a bittersweet ending like the one described(where he doesn't get to reunite with his long lost love but does find out she never stopped loving/thinking of him) would have suited the movie better...it didn't feel like a happy ending movie to me throughout watching it and it threw me at the end!

It's funny how we build our own stories. I didn't expect your story. The story I built was that Rita was dead and that the shrine Chico shared a drink with contained her ashes. I was expecting Rita to die in the course of the movie and for Chico to be left with his memories. When the whole Chico revival thing happened I was taken by surprise and I was really taken by surprise at the whole reunited thing. Like you I found the ending oddly unsatisfying.

I thought she was his daughter. :)

Okay. I have to admit that I was nodding of toward the end of this one. I was sort of bored. So can someone tell me what it said on the gravestone? I was under the impression that Rita was dead. But then that whole ending thing. I was more confused than anything.

The gravestone revealed that Chico's manager had died (can't recall the character's name at the moment).

I was wondering about the scene with the young singer, too; I didn't jump the conclusion that she was a relative a his, but I like that they left it kind of open-ended.

For those of you confused or wondering about the identity of the young singer who is Chico's fan and has his records, you need to know a bit about Latin culture. The animated character (Estrella Morente) is played by real-life flamenco singer, Estrella Morente, who is well known in Spain. The idea being that a famous singer (such as maybe a Christina Aguilera type character) becomes interested in Chico's music and by recording his music provides him with recognition and fame. Hope this helps.

As for me I didnt cauz i just felt that it was a simple movie right from the start and that what makes it so lovely to watch but i agree that the ending wasnot satisfying enough maybe her death would have put the movie in the right spot

even the real Rita [Rita Montaner] died and left the the real Chico [Bebo Valdés] behind. Sometimes real life ends better than in the movies

I too on first viewing sort of expected the young singer to be his daughter or granddaughter ...although it quickly became clear from the film (and also from this thread:-) that wasn't the case.

I didn't though have any feelings about which way I "wanted" the plot to go. Or to say it a different way, I wasn't "disappointed" that my first guess turned out to be wrong.

Perhaps interestingly, my very first thought on getting into that scene was "Buena Vista Social Club" (of course not literally Bebo, but the spirit seems about right...). And I've heard enough about collecting old records and about the really unusual recording collections of many artists, it wasn't at all hard for me to believe that she'd have all those recordings.

I never thought about the grandaughter thing.. I was wondering if Rita died near the end too.. but I wasn't disappointed that she lived..
