Why re-hide (spoiler)?

I wondered why Annie moved the parcel to a different hiding place without Ondine's knowledge.

Well here from Wikipedia is what appears to be the answer: "Other times the human will hide the selkie's skin, thus preventing them from returning to seal form."

It seems Annie fervently wished Ondine (whom she thought was a Selkie) to stay on land rather than go back to the ocean.

Well, yes. It was only mentioned a couple of times in the film so it's understandable you missed it. Duh.

reply

that bothered me too , but not because of the myth behind it - how and when
would/could have Annie moved the bundle into the lobster trap - and was it
actually in there at all ? Annie was not an accomplished swimmer for one thing.
and putting something in a lobster trap?it isn't exactly a hiding place - for
obvious reasons.....seems like that group of people would have a lot of
explaining to do to the cops when they called them-and where did "Ondine's"
husband's "partner" come from? we saw him wandering around the village but
always alone...
oh, and how convenient that the bundle floated along and ended up right next
to the raft right in the bay where the house was where Ondine stayed....
if she wanted to hide it all she had to do is just leave it where it was.
oh,and when Ondine's husband was arrested how come he wasn't deported back
to Romania like they immediately wanted to do with Ondine ? how come he is
still wandering around ?
.
.
then again -I might be over thinking this.

I think, with respect, overanalysing it is exactly what you are attempting to do. It is what it is - the film is a fairy tale, I don't see the point of trying to make everything fit into place. Much better, IMO, to not try to make everything logical, which would only water down the narrative anyway.

reply

It is not illogical to ask these questions. If Ondine was a selkie, and the movie the movie ended as a fairy-tale it would be OK not to look for logic in a Twilight-zone-world (and the movie should have been directed by Tim Burton if so), but the plot ended to be completely realistic, so if Ondine/Ioanna was arrested and supposed to be deported, where was this harsh reality before?

reply

I think, when Annie is in the confessional, one of the lies she said she told was that she never put the "sealcoat" in the lopster storage trap either.I can only imagine what would have happened once the crooks pulled up an empty trap.

reply

Yes, Annie admitted that she lied about a place where she had hidden it.
