USE CLOSED CAPTIONING!

Please comment so this stays at the first page so people are informed.

I've noticed so many threads on this board complaining about not being able to understand the accent.

The US requires film companies to provide captions for individuals with hearing impairments (at least from major distributors). These captions traditionally fell into the closed captioning department. With DVD though, there was a move to English subtitles. Now you can find movies with CC or English subtitles or both. My favorite is when the movie uses CC for actual captions including sounds and music while subtitles are left for only verbal translations. If the movie you want does not have English subtitles, check and see if it has closed captioning and you will get what you need.

A bonus- if you are trying to identify a song in a tv show or movie, check and see if the closed captioning gives you a clue. It may either say the song name/artist or it will give you the lyrics to help you do an internet search.

yes, the captions definitely help--i always use them for British tv so I knew i would need them for this.

Glad you understood :) However there were many complaints on the message board from people who were not able to understand the accents. My tip was directed at them.
