Bums

They lived like friggin' bums. How nasty it must have been to be stuck on that bus. Also, marching around like a bunch of children playing with musical instruments does not sound like my idea of fun. I don't blame Kerouac for not wanting to be around these overgrown children. What kind of judgment thinks getting stranded in the desert with a breakdown is a good situation to get knocked out of your heads on LSD? That's the exact opposite of what you should do in such a sobering situation. Where were the adults around to watch that girl and prevent her from drinking the whole darn bottle of LSD and going bonkers like Sid Barrett? Being a hippie is not romantic, it is little more than being a bum. Mike Judge along with Trey Parker and Matt Stone from South Park are correct in making fun of the hippie mythology, if I got transported to the 60s I'd rather live like Don Draper than these bums.

To be fair, their antics weren't the reason for Kerouac's hostility. By 1964, Kerouac was a raging alcoholic.

His sister had died that same year. He had little patience for anyone, including his wife or life-long friends. He spent most evenings in bars where he was always thrown out for violent, drunken tantrums. He died a few years later from internal hemorrhaging due to alcohol abuse. That era was the nadir of his existence.

In short: Not the best time to visit Kerouac.
