She seems unable to comprehend why Billy was angry about the sex scene. Even in the deleted scene in which she apologizes for the things that she said to him, she still doesn't acknowledge his reason for being upset. Earlier in the film she appears to be an intelligent young woman, but this apparently this is not the case, since she doesn't adequately prepare Billy for seeing her in an explicit sex scene nor does she understand his reaction after the fact. Is she stupid?

None of that addresses why Natalie did not understand Billy's reaction to her sex scene. If we knew why she was unhappy for the last seven years that still would not explain why she seemed unable to comprehend Billy's reaction.

She was not stupid. She was just passive aggressive. If she had been thinking about him in any way she would have prepared him for that scene. But she had moved on and already decided that the "only thing keeping them together for seven years was a dead girl". I think she was in a bad place. She resented her life in the past and present (including the people in it) and the only way for her to move forward was to "let things explode" the way they did.

Agreed, she basically sabotaged the relationship.

She wanted out, so she set him up to 'go off' so she can break up guilt free.

I have seen this in real life, from both sexes, numerous times.

Sadly, that was probably the most realistic part of the movie.

This is just your opinion, I highly doubt she did this intentionally. She did not seem happy or guilt-free when they split, and she appeared loved up early on in the film (recall the dinner scene).

I think she was just so excited to be a lead in a film that she didn't really think how her sex scene could be seen as quite graphic.

Their relationship was one of the lows of the film, going from really good to being in pieces in the space of 2 scenes.

Yes, it is my opinion; every word on these boards is someone's opinion.
But my opinion is based on real life experiences.

People don't get so excited about a job that they forget that their partner might not want them rolling around naked with someone else.
No matter how good the job is.

She had to know it would be an issue, unless she's a complete moron.
So, she either didn't care that it would
be, or hoped that it would be.

Either way, she's human garbage.

I agree that it seemed like it came out of nowhere. Kind of against the character leading up to that, as they didn't make her out to be an insane bitch.

But I also agree with the other guy that this deliberate relationship sabotage is very realistic, based on previous experience too. It's not a guy or a girl thing, it's just an *beep* thing. Triggering pain in your partner then acting like nothing's wrong is the coward's tactic, it basically enables them to try and paint their partner for being the "crazy" one.

By triggering a destructive reaction, she can lessen the guilt and also gripe to her galpals or future man about how she was the victim. Total BS.

She understood perfectly well why he was angry. She was looking at the screen as if she really enjoyed filming that scene which he took to mean she was having an affair. And the story was written that she was blowing off another man to be with this man (who happens to be the director) in the pretenious film. "I like the line where the sky meets the water, I know he's religious he needs hope Woman: Please to don't talk about him". She's clearly already prepared to move on to bigger and better things and she used his reaction as an excuse to dump him. Also note that the filmmaker had already been making off hand insults towards billy. In public he asked "I mean come on hows a guy like you end up with a girl like natalie?" It was clear the was a defensive rivalry between billy and the director. She was clearly gushing over him by saying. I woulden't have been in this movie if it wasn't for you. So I thank you it was really sweet. Awkward conversation when your sitting right next to your boyfriend.
