Pretty enjoyable, but the ages?

Emily Blunt was a better match in age for Rupert Grint than Bill Nighy, and I like Nighy. But the age difference (the movie said he was 55, but that's a pretty clear fiction, he's 61, and he looks older) between him and Emily (28) was just skeevey, and detracted from a lot of the fun.

i disagree. a person is just a person. if you're attracted to them, age doesn't matter (if you're both legal, of course). i myself am 20 years old and am highly, albeit strangely, attracted to bill nighy!
also, if the 30 year age gap bothers you in this movie, try the 50 year age gap in harold and maude! ha.

While I agree that a person is just a person, and love is just love; I also think that was just part of it. I also think that is was somewhat opportunistic on Rose's part. She is a grifter, thief, and scam artist. But Victor is a wealthy hit man who is lonely and has few opportunities for social or intimate interaction.

While I think they were fond of each other, I also think there was an element of convenience for both of them in the relationship. Neither was able to have any thing approaching a normal relationship, but between two people who hide outside the law, this was a somewhat perfect arrangement.

So, again, I think they were truly fond of each other, but I also think there was an element of convenience to their relationship.

Remember in the movie Maynard's father had him when he was 55. And that was 54 years ago. The mother is currently about 75 or 80 so that made her about 25 when Maynard's father impregnated her.

For me the relationship that Victor and Rose develop is through a genuine need for each other and just because he happens to be 25-30 years older doesn't seem to matter as they are both lonely people loking for somebody to share their life with and in the case of Victor especially I think its possible that Rose is the first person he has seriously considered as a potential love interest.

My last girlfriend was 16 years my junior and we was together 6 years. Age was never an issue. My ex-wife was 8 years younger than me and we was together 10 years. I got friend married woman 14 years older than he is. They been married since 83. My father was 14 years older than my mother. My grandfather was 71 when he married my 35 year old grandmother (Which is why my grandfather fought in the US Civil War). There is nothing intrinsically wrong with a May-December romance. It can actually be more rewarding than prejudices like yours can understand.

Why do you seek realism in a comedy? And women date older (dying even) men for their money every day, so why not for love? And to stick to the movie the character misses Blunt portrayed wasn't your ordinary stuck up, prudish english woman, nor was mister Nighy's character your average old fart. They were two deeply damaged (yet remarcable) individuals, lonely and scared, so I didn't find the development of a relationship so big a stretch from reality. Once one understands the roots of such an unconventional bond, it really doesn't seem weird at all anymore.

Nicely stated. I agree entirely.

Are you okay with homosexuality? If yes, then you can't judge age differences as long as both people are legal.

The movie did not say Bill Nighy was 55 but the character he was playing was.

I came here looking for this. The age difference creeped me out. It was really revolting. And it's not an exception, too. In many films you get men in their late 50's/early 60's hooking up with women in their 20s/early 30s. What the h*ll man?

And I'm sure that all the men who defend the age difference in this thread wouldn't be half as understanding if we had a movie where Dame Maggie Smith hooked up with Rupert Grint (clad in skimpy boy-shorts and sporting a quiff).

Haven't any of you clowns heard of Geoffrey Edelsten? This sort of stuff is not uncommon.
