When those little black panties came sliding down...

...it caught me by surprise. Did she have a butt body double?
I thought it was a pretty sexy scene and kind of felt bad for the other dude.

That scene surprised me too I wondered what others thought of that scene.

She says in the making of stuff on the DVD that she originally wrote a much tamer thing with just her and that guy making out on the couch, but she said a former boyfriend encouraged her to "go for it" and do the more explicit sex scene.

For me personally the scene didn't work (even though I agree with your assessment of her butt :).

I felt like it was a scene out of a different kind of movie for a different kind of character/a different kind of actress.

I feel like Miss July reminds me of Charlie Chaplin or Carol Burnett or people like that. The melancholy clown with a childlike innocent quality kind of thing.

I like that she seems so different than hollywood movies, more thoughtful, more of an artist and a poet and not about T&A.

And I think it's more than just "the times have changed" that explains why I can't imagine Charlie Chaplin or Carol Burnett in a sex scene.

It was like I'm reading the comics in the sunday paper, or reading a sensitive poem, and along comes this graphic sex when I wasn't expecting it.

I say this from the point of view of overall feeling like a fan of her work and feeling like this one scene for me was kind of splotch of paint on an otherwise beautiful painting.

I wondered if I was the only one who felt that way...

I think the booty shot was definitely important. It's a much more powerful emotional experience when the childlike innocent is defiled in that way. I do not think the scene is sexy, i think it is tragic, and it is more brutally so because of its explicit nature and the way that it contradicts the twee attitude of the rest of the thing. Part of the reason it works is because it's out of place and because you're not expecting us. It sets us up emotionally for her boyfriend's grief/ability to stop time.

I totally agreee with callawaythings. Not to say I don't agree with the above comment. See your right the scene was a splotch of out of place paint, which is why it works so well. At this point in the film we couldn't imagine that that type of scene would EVER be shown to us. The first part of the movie is something out of a children's book. It's so fun and whimsical that we forget that this is real life we're dealing with.

Miranda hits us so hard with this out of place sex scene, that she somehow managed to put us in the same boat as her soon to be ex-boyfriend. This brilliant move is as much shocking as it is engrossing.

Such a huge fan of this new time director and look forward to her future work.

I liked the scene, and the somewhat comical element at the end didn't hurt.

You see a pair of knickers and Ms July's butt (otherwise clothed) and this is "graphic sex"? It was implied sex with mild nudity - you must have very prudish tastes!

Zooming to a crackling fire instead would have robbed the scene of its impact - it drives home the shock of such a meek, quiet mannered character seeking out meaningless sex with a stranger.

Nothing prudish/squeamish about it. I'm pretty sure he/she was referring to the *effect* of the scene on one's senses...not the literal graphic nature of sex scene.

The effect is like the sudden impact of a car crash when you'd been coasting along the highway on a sunny day. WHAMMM!

I thought it was a great scene - the most memorable in the movie. But surprising, certainly. I thought there was a powerful realism to it, and I thought it went well enough with the somewhat bizarre style of the rest of the movie.

(Whattaya mean, a body double?! It was completely clear in the subsequent shot that it was the real person.)

By and large a brave scene, and a brave movie, from Miranda July. Very commendable.

I think that scene was meant to attack the viewer's sense of right and wrong. The whole act becomes suddenly very real and provides a profound sense of betrayal.

reply

Great explanation. I did feel a little queasy after that scene.

A poster said she was sexually frustrated, but all i thought was she was having some kind of breakdown with the guy whom she just met. Then moving in with him. Sad how both men threw her out. I don't think she even knew who she was.

Years later I felt compelled to order the DVD. I should get it next week. Definitely worth a re watch. I'm curious to see if this scene effects me the way it did the first time.

The scene was odd to me. I didn't think that she would wear those types of panties. It didn't fit her character at all.
