Learning that he hadn't long left in the world, he extracted a promise from El Djebena to look after Djamila and the child once he was gone. Don't forget also,that Ryad had named El Djebena as godfather to his son too. In the case of El Djebena, Ryad was almost a brother to him, introducing him to Djamila and there was a sense of comfort and salvation gained from El Djebena both at the dinner table and when she had a shoulder to cry on in the kitchen. Finally, his going home with Djamila (at her request) demonstrated how she and the child were the closest thing to a family he had left in the world.
