Why does Malik give money to the Imam?

Think he gave the imam the money because he felt as though he belonged more with them than the Corsicans (and also as a power play).. He wanted the Muslims to have more power and when he can say he gave them that power by giving them money, he will become powerful in their group. They beat him up because they didn't want him giving dirty money to the imam and wanted him to deal with them instead

He was more threatened than beaten up. It was a gamble to get onside with the Muslim group who were under the influence of the Imam. The leader actually summarises it at the end of his meeting with Malik when he says, "You did it so you could talk to me". Once accepted, it gave Malik more power and influence to carry out his plans, backed by the Muslim group and he is able to finally put César in his place.🐭
