Anymore good French movies?

Are there any more good french movies, that are enjoyable to watchg. this is the first french movie i ever watch and was pretty good.

i dont want any romantic movie or any old movie, but rather anything made after 1990, and some sort of movie which has a good story or good action or even a good comedy or horror.

can anyone suggest any?

To kick off the list:
By the same director - Read My Lips (2001) and The Beat My Heart Skipped (2005)
Mesrine (parts 1 & 2)(2008)
Inside/À l'intérieur 2007 horror
36 Quai des Orfèvres (2004) action
Female Agents (2008) a WW2 story based on a true story
&
The First Day of the Rest of Your Life (2008) - comedy

I really like all of these.

La Haine. - One of my favourite movies of all time without a shadow of a doubt. If you watch one film I list here, watch this.

Irreversible. - One of the more controversial movies you might see. Gaspar Noé deliberately set out to make his audience feel uneasy, and for the most part succeeded.

Tzameti. - Technically a Georgian film; but it's a French language film, and set in France. Best not to look it up before watching, just go in and enjoy the suspense.

Angel-A. - I hesitate to recommend compared to the others on this list, but I personally think it's a beautiful film. It might not be to many peoples taste at first glance, but I've yet to show it to someone and them not enjoy it.

Banlieue 13. (Otherwise known as District 13) - Otherwise known as 'The freerunning movie'. Lots of action, little story, there's also a sequel.

La Femme Nikita. - Not sure if this makes the cut as it was actually made in 1990. However, another great French thriller that was later remade in the US under the name 'Point Of No Return', and then later the tv series 'La Femme Nikita'.

Delicatessen. - Another from the early 90's, but still a very memorable and pretty surreal comedy/horror.

La Haine, first french film I ever saw back in French class at school. Very impressed still on my top list of films

Tell No One and Swimming Pool are both great. Better than A Prophet actually (IMO).

But I don't know why you would rule out older films or romantic films. Some of the best French films of all-time fail that prerequisite:

Diabolique (1955) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967--older, romantic, and a musical...OMG it could kill you!)

"Well, for once the rich white man is in control!" C. M. Burns

Yep.

Late response to your original post. I'm ashamed to say I've only just watched un prophète... Bad me.

I want to re-iterate Mr/Miss Clothes-Off and say that "Tell No One" will probably sort you out, for starters. La Piscine is a thing of beauty too.

Considering film was invented by a frog back in the day, they have a well-subsidised industry and go to great lengths to curate the cinematic arts - I'm sure you'll find one or two other films to watch.

Maybe google "french film director" and you'll find a couple. I fell in love with french cinema after watching things like Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, Pierrot le Fou, Les 400 Coups (and all Truffaut), Breathless, Jour de Fête (again any Tati), Besson (The Big Blue, Nikita, Leon, 5th Element), La Haine, Delicatessen, Amélie... Endless list. Recently there was Polisse too. Get a few under your belt and you'll see French influence in so many english films moving forward. If you're ready to get geeky, be sure to watch "Caché" by Haneke and "Copie Conforme", which will really make you re-discover cinema and the nature of story telling - it's alright not to enjoy them, they're a bit *beep* (Don't forget to check out cinema from all over the world too.

The other films mentioned in this thread are good too, I'm not a prude, but some of theme are a bit "Cinema du Shock". It's the subtle ones that will actually floor you and stay with you for years to come.

Anyway, enjoy... and don't limit yourself to post 1990!

There's really a million of them. Les Diaboliques, La Grande Vadrouille, Amelie, Long Dimanche de Fiancailles (with Jodie Foster doing her own lines in French), Pere Noel est une ordure, les Visiteurs...

Just saw this movie today and loved it!

Other memorable French movies that haven’t mentioned before are:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)

The Intouchables (2011)

I highly recommended those, cause they will make a great impact!
