shareThats what I asked too. I think the dads friend wasn't necessarily abusing Chook, but still climbing into a young boys bed is wrong. It could've escalated eventually into a sexual abuse case, and Kev was stopping it before it ever started.

shareI think it was definitely hinted at that the friend "Max" could be abusing Chook. On the DVD commentary the director Glendyn Ivin says that originally that scene was more explicit and it was kinda clear that Max was abusing Chook. He also said that the test audience talked mostly about that scene after the movie ended an so the director decided to play it down and leave it to the imagination coz he didn't want it to be a movie about sexual abuse. I think he was somehow right but I still get that the scene like it is in the theatrical version is somehow a little confusing and they could have gone a little further. I mean Chook thinks that Max was "just lonely" and that his father doesn't understand that. That is such a classic response from a child's point of view. The father with all his background just saw at this moment that his friend was abusing his kid so of course he was outraged.
Having said that, I think that "Last Ride" is a true gem.

Well this is how I saw it... I think that once the dad saw max in his son's bed he started seeing max as being gay and violating his son. So when chook has all this makeup on he gets reminded of gays coz of the connotations of cross dressing... Which then reminds him of max, so the dad sees some of max in chook Making him lash out.
And I dont really think he's a bad dad... He just doesn't know how to be a good one. I mean you
Can tell he really loves Chook because of everyhing he's done. But then again he is abusive. He tries to be a good dad just goes the wrong way around it.
I don't know if that made sense... It makes sense in my head but that doesn't say much.
Yeah I agree with you, this is party why I loved this movie so much, because the dad is such a real character in his complexity. While hitting a child is always wrong, it doesn't necessarily make the person a complete monster, he was just a faulted man.
shareThere's a scene where Kev tells his son a lot of bad things happen in prison - so I would guess he was raped by bigger stonger inmates while in prison & when he saw Max in bed w/his son he may have had a flashback - also Max & Kev were likely in prison together & Kev may have seen Max partake in homosexual activity .

shareI don't think that Max was abusing Chook. I think that he loved the kid, felt sorry for him, and acted more like a father to Chook than Kev did.
Kev came home and saw Max in bed with Chook, and he obviously thought that Max was sexually abusing the kid. Kev's temper got the best of him, and he beat Max to death.
Maybe I'm naive - thinking that Max was just trying to be close to Chook, without being a pedophile - just made a bad judgement call climbing into bed with him. Who knows.
