Why was Cal so mean in S3.1 ?

The first episode of season 3 was like a total character change for Cal . He was sniping with Foster, then he yelled at that new female intern .

Also, what did he say to Foster at the end ? Something about " if you so-and-so, then you and I are through " . That was a bit harsh .
