Greenberg's Rant at the Party

What do you guys think about his rant about how young people are fearless and mean?

reply

great rant. great movie. great writer/director.

It's a great speech -- because it's his generational awakening -- every subsequent generation exists to scare the *beep* out of the one that came before it. He's older and wiser and his perceived notion about their casual indifference, confidence and/or cruelty is part of his life crisis. His fear of growing older and his general assertion that humanity is failing are common themes in the film. What does he say at one point in response to "Youth it's wasted on the young"? He says "I would go one further: Life, it's wasted on people".

reply

I think he's right. Kinda. Kids seem more sophisticated (due to the internet), more self-absorbed (just like Greenberg was/is) and more know-it-all-ish.

Kids now (listen to me sounding old) have a lot of knowledge, experience and material possessions that they never earned.

reply

But a lot of the "internet due" knowlegde and experience is often very superficial. McDonald's drive thru insights, to put it another way.

reply

I'd agree with that.

i thought this scene was great. it was a good portrayal of the trippy "old" guy that's at the party, wasted dude who is kind of funny, wise, inappropriate and scary all at the same time. my favorite line was" i could kill one of you out of sheer frustration!" i laughed out loud at that one.

this was a good flick!

reply

I'm wondering about the line, "what do you got" (originally Marlon Brando) and the girl answered "nothing", and that pissed him off more. Is he, the writer, saying the 20 something generation is vapid? I think so.

Is the younger generation empty of original thought and action? It's a good question. Of course, one may ask that about anyone of any age these days, what is anyone doing that's original?

Just for your film edification, the line was spoken by Marlon Brando in The Wild One, 1953, not James Dean in Rebel. Brando, as Johnny, is asked by one of his gang, "Hey Johnny, what are you rebelling against?" Johnny answers, "What'a you got"?

reply

Yea. I don't think we're meant to consider the content of the rant so much as we're meant to consider it as a display of Greenberg's pathology.

reply

He's right. Life is wasted on people, especially on some people.

reply

> Life is wasted on people, especially on some people.

Certainly was wasted on me! So far.

reply

He may of been right on, sounded like young people to me nowadays.

reply

I thought it was accurate. It reminded me a little of the Arcade Fire album The Suburbs. Especially the song "Rococo". Here are the lyrics... and I'm not saying the lyrics are profound, but they echo the idea that the kids are overconfident with nothing to validate their opinions

Let’s go downtown and watch the modern kids
Let’s go downtown and talk to the modern kids
They will eat right out of your hand
Using great big words that they don’t understand

They’re singing
Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo…
Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo…

They build it up just to burn it back down
They build it up just to burn it back down
The wind is blowing all the ashes around
Oh my dear God what is that horrible song they're singing?

They seem wild but they are so tame
They seem wild but they are so tame
They’re moving towards you with their colors all the same
They want to own you but they don’t know what game

reply

Very interesting.
