Was Ewan McGregor cast because....

... of his role in Star Wars?

reply

Or were all the Jedi references written in because of Ewan McGregor?

reply

the jedi stuff is in the original book.

reply

I thought that was really annoying and took alot away from the movie. Every Star Wars reference made with him on the screen just made me twist my face in sarchasm. The movie wasn't all that good in the first place and that really blew it for me.

Wow, lighten up. You really didn't get the feel of the movie if that annoyed you.

reply

I thought it was funnier because of it. Of course they picked him on purpose. The Jedi references would fall flat without that connection.

reply

I'm slow. I didn't pick up on the Jedi and Star Wars references with Ewan McGregor until 2/3 into the film. Once I realized it, I said to my boyfriend, "Hey, that's funny because he's in it" and he's like, "You *just* figured that out!?!!"

>.<

reply

No kidding.

reply

made me twist my face in sarchasm

Hmmm... how do you do that?

In the context of your sentence that doesn't make any sense.

Hi all,

I can't understand the Jedi reference. They were recruited in the 60's in the vietnam war. Jedi was mentioned when George Clooney had long hair and so they were still in the 60's or late 60's. Star Wars never came out until 1978 so they wouldn't know what a Jedi was at that point.

I can understand the reference later in the movie though, as this was set after 1978.

The war in Vietnam lasted until 1975. And Django after he was released from hospital went on a fact finding mission for 6 years. And it was stated that he returned to base around 1980. So by that time the Star Wars movies were out (at least the first one).

reply

I may be off track, but although the Vietnam War ended in 1975, didn't US involvement end in 1971?

Either way, he returned to the base around 1980. Star Wars was out by that time.

1) Alec Guinness was otherwise engaged

2) The joke was funny the first time around, much less funny the next 500 times.

Although, it was really funny in a couple specific instances, a lot of other times it seemed like they were just flogging the joke.

3) There actually ARE military units who really go to town with this movie imagery stuff -- it is not at all unusual for some of these guys to call themselves "the evil empire," "terminators," "dark knights," etc etc.

reply

Would of been funnier if they called the prequels out for its "sucky-ness"

I didn't even know he was in Star Wars when I first watched this movie..

reply

They should have gone whole hog and had Lyn refer to Bill as "Yoda," and Bob as "my young padawan."

Then Bob says, "Who's Obi-Wan Kenobi" and Lyn just gives him a look.

It was kind of odd seieng Ewan McGregor make fun of Jedis seeing he was one for a few flicks tooSource:Movie Reviews The Men Who Stare At Goatshttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2010/01/movie-reviews-the-men-who-star e-at-goats

Ewan was not cast because of his role in Star Wars. It's just random irony.

"Don't point that gun at him, he's an unpaid intern!"

reply

i never made the connection until i read this thread :(

reply

No, he was cast in the movie because he's a good actor.

reply

I'm just glad they didn't cast someone as creepy and fruity* as the actual person he's playing i.e. author of the original book Jon Ronson.
