Major goof in the movie's plot

The movie is set in Michigan, right? Well then what's his name couldn't have been on death row, because... MICHIGAN DOESN'T HAVE THE DEATH PENALTY!

Actually, according to wiki "Michigan was the first English-speaking government in the world to abolish totally the death penalty."

Whoops!

Guess no one bothered to mention that to them when they were filming on location.

Well, the movie IS about alternate timelines.

Maybe in that one alternate timeline, the death penalty had been re-instated.

In real life, though, there are no time travelers in Michigan, either. Is the death penalty really the most unbelievable aspect of the movie?

Of all the implausibilities this movie has, you choose this? Seriously?

It was a side effect of one of Sam's jumps, leaps, or whatever.

thank you for letting us know, being European I get the impression that the US is all terrible with death penalty, so I appreciate this information, though it doesn't make any difference for the movie ;-)

I'm just going to jump in here quickly.

USE YOUR DAMN HEAD!

I'm in Canada. We sentence people to concurrent life sentences.. in other words they are NEVER GETTING OUT .. worst of the worst mofos. When in Canada as in many civilized US states that have gotten rid of the death penalty you are actually sentenced to LIFE IN PRISON.. that doesn't even really mean you'll be in prison for life. IN FACT .. FAR FROM IT! You'll usually get out in 25. UNLESS the sentences are concurrent life sentences.. in which case you will die in there.

We DO NOT use the term "Death Row" to describe those max security prisons and the dude is right, "Death Row" is reserved for people heading for the needle or noose.

God, I can't believe how amazingly impossible it is to get someone ON THE INTERNET of all places to admit "Okay I was wrong! Thanks for correcting me!" instead you'll argue a point that .... omg.... NO ONE who has a clue would EVER agree with you.

Many people serving life sentences are mixed in with people doing 10 to 20 or 10 with time off. HERE and in MICHIGAN and NEVER ARE THOSE FACILITIES REFERED TO AS ANY SORT OF "DEATH ROW".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back-to-back_life_sentences

FIND ME ANY REFERENCE ANYWHERE IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM IN ANY NATION THAT REFERS TO PEOPLE SERVING "LIFE SENTENCES" AS "DEATH SENTENCES" .. don't you think that would be a LITTLE FRACKING CONFUSING!?

"I'm serving a death sentence for 13 years now.. yup, up for parole in 12 more years."

IS THE MOST MORONIC THING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!

The other thing is BTW YOU UTTER TROLL.. is that people condemded to DEATH are NEVER mixed in with general population inmates, can you guess why? Maybe nothing to lose? Already murderers and too dangerous even for Max Security, WHICH IS WHY THEY HAVE A "DEATH ROW" which is far more restrictive and PRETTY DAMN CLEAR ON WHAT ITS FRACKING PURPOSE IS!

My god. The movie made a minor mistake for the purpose of story telling (don't know why it didn't just take place in Texas though) ... live with it instead of trying to rationalize it IN REAL LIFE for crying out loud.

What a waste of time. Unreal.

Dude, I'm so sorry you had to argue this out with this dude and no one came to your general aid. No one should have to face an argument of ignorence of basic .. the most BASIC of legal definitions on their own.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_is_death_row_in_Michigan

"Michigan doesn't have a death penalty, so there's no death row in MI."

How many people do you need to hear it from? Google "Michigan" and "Death Row" and you get more hits about Dr Dre than you do legal stuff. Holy crap.

NEVER EVER are people who are spending "LIFE" in prison EVER refered to as being on death row. Thats such a stupid argument it boggles my mind that folks like you actually have net access.

OMG, they need to seperate forums .. you take like a general IQ test and if you have one.. then you get to sit at the grown ups movie forum, and if not then you can tell people doing "life in prison" (which means they are eligible for parole after 25 years and SOMETIMES as early as 20) that they are on 'death row' in the utter waste of time kiddie/lack of IQ movie forum.

Ugh.
