Why do they ruin these films with drag queens?

You have an otherwise naturalistic film in real locations with appropriately-cast actors, and then you have this stupid gimmick with a campy drag performer playing the mother (and, to make it even more of a gimmick) her male fiance. It completely blows the reality. I love drags in the right part in the right movie, but what the hell went on here? They did the same thing in "Grief," but at least that was a comedy.

It's an obvious homage to Divine and her roles in movies like Hairspray, but I agree with you, the acting of the drag queen isn't good enough and it takes away from the movie. on the other hand, one could take into consideration that the mother's bits in the film are supposed to be comical as well.
